Brandon's POV

The moment I saw the name "Cindy" flash across my security report, my chest tightened. She wasn't supposed to be back-at least not like this. I had made it clear months ago that whatever we once had was over. She knew it. Hell, she'd cried, screamed, and finally walked away. But apparently, that wasn't the end of it.

And now she was at my house, trying to force her way in.

I glanced at Kiara, her eyes wide with worry. She had no idea how unpredictable Cindy could be, and the last thing I wanted was to drag her into that chaos.

I slipped my phone back into my pocket.

"Everything okay"

My chest tightened. "It's my house security.

They're reporting a problem. Cindy's trying to force her way in."

"Your ex?" she whispered, and I could hear the unease in her voice.

"Yeah," I admitted, meeting her gaze. "I need to take care of this. I'll be back in a minute."

"Okay", she whispered softly.

I left her and went inside, where i found my dad watching the news.

"Dad I need the emergency security team to be dispatched to my house right now. High level security issue"

He understood immediately and started the process. I started going back to the garden, i need to take Kiara back home and make sure this matter is settled.

She was still standing on the spot i left her, she studied me for a long moment, and I could almost see the questions swirling in her mind.

"I have dispatched security to my house but I need to go and check the situation there", I need to tell her something to prevent her from worrying too much, to my relief, she didn't press further. She just nodded, though her expression remained tight. She understands this kind of situation very well, she has handled it as my assistant in the past.

"Let me take you home," I said softly. "I don't want you caught up in whatever this is."

The ride back to her apartment was quiet. Kiara sat beside me in the car, her hand resting lightly in mine. Every so often, I felt her glance at me, as though she wanted to ask more but chose not to.

When we pulled up to her building, she finally broke the silence. "You'll tell me if this gets serious, right? I don't like being in the dark, Brandon."

Her voice was soft but steady. She wasn't just worried-she was reminding me she wasn't someone I could shut out.

I squeezed her hand. "I promise. I'll keep you in the loop. But for now, don't stress about Cindy. Focus on you. On us."

She gave me a faint smile, leaned over, and kissed me lightly. "Be careful."

"I will," I said, watching her disappear into her building before signaling the driver to keep going.

I didn't go home. Not yet. Instead, I texted Ethan, my most trusted aide-and honestly, my only friend.

If anyone could dig into Cindy's sudden reappearance, it was him.

Aside from his chain of restaurants, Ethan owns a private investigtion agency that i use for some secret investigations the police can't handle.

We met at my private office downtown, the kind of place I used for matters I didn't want tied directly to the company, only my dad is aware of it. Ethan was already there when I walked in, laptop open, files spread out across the desk.

"You look like hell," Ethan said bluntly as he leaned back in his chair licking a lollipop.

"Thanks for the pep talk," I muttered, shrugging off my jacket. "She showed up at my house tonight. Security said she tried to force her way in."

Ethan's expression changed from playful to serious. "Cindy?"

"Yes." I pinched the bridge of my nose. "She's been out of the picture for months. Why now? What the hell does she want?"

Ethan tapped his fingers against the desk. "If she's resurfaced this way, it's not random. People like Cindy don't just show up without an agenda."

"Find out what it is," I said firmly. "I don't want her anywhere near Kiara. She doesn't need that kind of drama."

Ethan's brows lifted slightly, but he didn't comment on the protective edge in my tone. He'd known me long enough to notice the shift, though. "Alright. I'll start with her finances, her movements, her contacts. If she's desperate, she might have made some bad deals or pissed off the wrong people."

I nodded, pacing the room. "I don't care what it takes. I want to know everything. Why she's here. What she's after. And I want it fast."

Ethan closed the laptop with a decisive snap. "Consider it done."

I sighed, "Thanks man".

When Ethan left, I sat alone in the dim office, staring out the window at the city lights. New York stretched endlessly before me, alive and unforgiving.

Kiara's face floated into my mind-her shy smile at dinner, the way she'd looked at me when I told her I wanted forever with her. She had no idea how deep she'd burrowed into my life, my heart. And she couldn't know how much it terrified me that Cindy's chaos could threaten that.

I wasn't the man I used to be-the one who entertained shallow relationships just to pass the time. Kiara had changed that. With her, I wanted stability. Future. Something real.

Which meant Cindy couldn't be a problem. Not anymore.

I pulled out my phone, firing off one last message to Ethan: Do whatever it takes. I want answers by tomorrow.

Then I leaned back in my chair, exhaling slowly.
For the first time in years, I felt the weight of something more than business on my shoulders. This wasn't about profit margins or company growth.

This was about protecting the woman I loved.
And I wasn't going to let anything-or anyone-take that away from me.

I am going to fight for this.
