Kiera's POV
"WAKE UP KIERA!", my mother yelled at me from what I assumed to be the kitchen since her voice sounded a little far off. Yes, my mother does still wake me up even though I am 16 years old and should have an alarm clock. Thing is, I hate that annoying, constant beeping it makes every two seconds. It drives me insane. Waking up at 7:20 in the morning is not what I signed up for when starting high school. And what's even worse is that I had to get up even earlier in elemenatary school. I mean, my littel six year old brain just could not comprehend why we were forced to get up so early, then go to school for six to seven hours and not be able to take a nap like when I was in kindergarden. Life is so messed up. Getting out of bed to brush my teeth, I step on something pointy and solid. Bending down and picking it up, I realize it's my younger sisters small bottle of mascara, the curcular edge causing pain in the bottom of my foot. Why the hell is that even in my room anyway? Shaking my head and putting it on my dresser, I make my way to the bathroom to finally start on my daily routine. After brushing my teeth, I straighten my mid back length, strawbery blonde hair. Some of the kids at school, including my friends, think I have red hair and some think I have blonde, but I have made it very clear that I am a strawberry blonde, but that doesn't mean that they don't still talk about it.
Deciding what to wear to school every day is pretty easy for me. I always lay out my clothes the night before anyway, as to not waist any extra needed time in the morning. Sliping on my skinny jeans, a blue and white stripped flowy shirt with a lace back and my black converse, I'm ready to go. Taking a good look at myself in the mirror I feel I'm ready to go to school. I run downstairs to the kitchen where my mom is making Jade, my younger sister, breakfast. "Mom, I'm ready to go, and Jade, why was you're mascara in my room?" I cross my arms and stair at her, waiting for an answer, "Sorry, K, but your room is the only one with a full length mirror and I have to make sure that the eyeshadow I choose matches my outfit." She shrugs like it's no big deal. I sigh and shake my head, "Just stay out of my room." She pipes back, "No promises," as mom and I walk out the door and to the car while Jade finishes eating. Of course I hate the fact that my mom has to drive me to school every morning, but I don't have a car yet and there's really no other option except taking the bus which I'd rather not take.
When my mom pulls into the parking lot to drop me off I see my friends hanging out by the black gate near the front entrance of the main building. "Have fun with your little thug friends", mom says with humor in her voice. "They're not my 'thug' friends, mom," I say with laughter in my voice. "Whatever you say sweetie. I'll see you after school." I give my mom a kiss on the cheek before stepping out of the car and walking up to my friend Max, his short black hair flopping in the wind and his adorable dimples showing from the huge smile he was sporting. We've been friends since eighth grade, and we seem to grow closer with every moment we spend together. "Hey short stuff," he says once he finally sees me. A giggle slips from my lips, "Hey Max, and don't call me 'short stuff', it's mean," I say, facking hurt on my face and crossing my arms. "Hey, it's not my fault you're the smallest chick to ever walk the planet," He wraps his arm around my shoulder and we all start walking to the front entrance.
"Hey, so how's your dad been?" I shrugged and wrapped my arm around his waist. "I talked to him last night and he seems to be doing okay. I really miss him, ya know? I only ever get to see him when it's a holiday, summer or spring break." He nodded his head and stared straight ahead. "My parents divorce is getting pretty messy. Dad broke into the house the other day and took pretty much everything. I always dread going over to his house. I just don't have any respect for him anymore; he's hurt our family so much and treats all of us like shit." I leaned my head on his shoulder as we walked through the halls. "It sucks you have suh a bad relationship with your dad now, but at least you know what it's like to have a whole family. My parents devorced so long ago, I don't even know what it's like to see a mom and dad in love and happy and all that jazz. At least you know what that feels and looks like." He squeezes my arm, pulling me close to him, "Trust me, it's not all it's cracked up to be."
When we make it to class I realize that Kenny hasn't shown up to class yet, and he wasn't outside waiting with Max. "Hey, where's Kenny, he's usually here by now isn't he?" I asked with confusion. "I don't know. Maybe he overslep- oh there he is." Max points behind me at Kenny and I turn around to see him running for the door just as the bell rings. When he finally gets to his seat behind me he's out of breath and leaning over his desk. Max and I start cracking up as he's huffing and puffing with his face as red as a firetruck. "Hey Ken," Max says through his laughter. As if he knows what we're going to ask next, he slowly says through his pants, "Alarm clock...didn't go off...overslept...again." I know the feeling; my mom is my alarm clock and when she isn't up when she should be, I'm not up when I should be. "Dude, you so called it." I point at Max with my mouth open in disbelief. "Called what?" asks Kenny, looking all confused. "I asked Max where you were and he said that maybe you over slept." Turning around to face Kenny. "Oh, but hey, it's not my fault, my alarm clock didn't go off this morning." Kenny says defensively. "Are you sure it didn't go off or you are just such a hard sleeper you just didn't hear it?" I asked him with a raised eyebrow. "Oh shut up Kiera." Kenny says in a defensive tone again, but I can see amusement in his eyes.
While in class I couldn't help feeling like something strange was going to happen today. I felt it in the pit of my stomach, almost like the feeling when your're on a rollercoaster at the top of the hill then the next thing you know you're plummiting down towards the ground. It was hard to focus on the teacher trying to explain this new tense to conjugate verbs in becasue I couldn't stop thinking about what could possibly happen today. What if Jade and mom were going to get into a car accident? What is a serial killer came to the school and started shooting down the place? All of these 'what ifs" were filling my mind, I didn't even notice Max calling my name, asking me to be in a group with him and Kenny for the class work we had to have completed before the bell rang. After we got our desks pushed together, Max and Kenny just staired at me strangely, like they knew something was up. "Spill," Max demanded, mischife in his voice. I sighed and stared at the clock across the room as I spoke, "I just get this feeling that something strange is going to happen today." They furrowed their eyebrows and exchanged looks. "Strange how?" asked Kenny. "I don't know. I can just feel it. It feels lik butterflies are erupting in my stomach, and not the good kind." They seemed to be thinking about something before Max spoke, "K, nothing bad is going to happen if that's what you're worried about, okay. You're going to be fine, and if something bad does happen, Ken and I will be here to protect you." He and Kenny fistbumped then looked back at me. I couldn't help but giggle, "You two? Protect me? Max, you're too afraid of spiders to even go near one to kill it, and Kenny, you jump at scary movies!" They both crossed their arms in defiance and looked as if they had a comeback, "Well....let's just do the assignment." I laughed again slightly before picking up my pencil and beginning taking notes, the butterflies in my stomach growing stronger by the minute.
