62 - Second Gear

I really hope I did this one justice tbh... Bit nervous but I'm hoping everyone enjoys it!! Monumental moments and all that ykwim. Very excited tho– I'm sure you all are as well just based on the title of the chap lol

We're getting into the nitty gritty of things now! Progression should be pretty quick over the next couple chapters

"Is she alright?"

A man's voice.

Muddled by the ringing in her ears.

"I-I'm not sure... Should we tell someone? W-What's the protocol here?"

"I don't know. I-I don't think there even is a protocol– I mean, I've never heard of an agent from CP9 being beaten before..."

Laid in the dirt, the woman stirs. The earth encases her limbs, as if trying to swallow her whole. Her skin itches, her nose twitches – blood.

"Wait– I think she's waking up!" The voice is clearer now, yet it throbs in her ears. "Ms. Rachel, are you alright? Do you require any medical assistance?"

"Yeah, should we call chief Spandam? O-Or maybe agent Lucci?" The second one adds, "How can we help?"

The name flashes behind her closed eyes like a brand.

Groaning, her irritation blooms amongst the pulsing-pain of a migraine... Or a concussion, either option would be awesome.

Rachel's face scrunches up into a snarl before her eyes have even opened. Her mind flashes, recognizing the two marine grunts as the ones from before, who must've witnessed that boy pummeling her into the ground – Straw Hat Luffy.

One swing.

That was all it took for her to be decommissioned, just like that. Outclassed in front of those beneath her position. The embarrassment burns molten-hot in her chest.

Rachel lifts herself from the exposed earth like a zombie, disguising the pain with her anger. That part wasn't too difficult; Fuming, her knees disagree with the effort of lifting to a full stand, swaying just slightly as she spears the two men with unbridled malice in her eyes.

"What the fuck are you looking at?" The words burst from her ribcage, spittle spewing between teeth, bared in their direction – Much like the beast she truly was.

They stare at her, pale and wide-eyed. Rachel can feel the grime powdering her cheeks, arms and legs. It congeals with the blood that slides down her temple, her hair sticking to the glue-like substance. She must look like a mess. A monster, even.

Whatever. Who fucking cared? That's what she'd been made to be, anyways.

One man opens his mouth to say something, but Rachel's over it.

"Idiots... Why'd you just stand here and do nothing?!" She snaps, "I need to head back to headquarters– Go get those brats, now!"

"Gum-Gum... Gatling!"

"Now, gum-gum whip!"

"Giant scythe!"

"Bell!"

"Mallet!"

"Bazooka!"

Luffy went through every attack in the book, and then some – even coming up with new ones, new names, on the spot – one after the other, because the marine forces chasing us through these red-bricked buildings were relentless.
