"So I need to ask you something and I need you to say yes."
Quincy leaned back in the chair behind the register, phone pressed to his ear, watching a customer flip through the jazz section. "The last time you said that I ended up helping you move a couch up four flights of stairs."
"This is better than a couch." Roman paused for effect. "I want you to be Jai'Amore's godfather."
Quincy sat up. "You serious?"
"Dead serious. You been my brother since middle school. You the most solid person I know. If anything ever happened to me I'd want my daughter raised by somebody who actually knows how to be a man. That's you."
Quincy rubbed his jaw, trying not to smile too hard in front of the customer. "Man. Yeah. Of course. You know I'm honored right?"
"Don't get emotional on me."
"I'm not emotional. My eyes are just sweating."
"Nigga."
"I said yes! Damn. Let me have a moment."
Roman laughed. That real laugh he only gave when he was genuinely happy. Jai'Amore was three weeks old now and Roman had been a different person since she arrived. Softer. More present. He'd posted a photo of her tiny hand gripping his index finger and Quincy had stared at it for longer than he'd ever admit.
"How's Eiare doing?" Quincy asked.
"She's good. Tired as hell but good. She's a natural with the baby. Makes me look stupid honestly. I'm over here googling how to burp a newborn and she's doing it one handed while eating a sandwich."
"Sounds about right."
"Speaking of which," Roman's tone shifted slightly. Not heavy. Just different. "I been thinking. Me and Eiare, we work well together. Not just with the baby but like in general. She gets me in a way Maria never did."
"Okay. And?"
"I broke it off with Maria."
Quincy pulled the phone away from his ear and looked at it like it had grown a face. He put it back. "You lying."
"I'm dead serious. Last week. Told her I couldn't keep pretending. She didn't take it well but I don't care no more. I spent too long letting that woman control how I moved. I got a daughter now. I gotta be better."
