"So this is the entrance to the underworld, ...I'm a bit underwhelmed." Alex said
"Ok let's get that clarinet fired up." Ethan said earning himself a glare from Alex.
She took a deep breath and started to play, this song was more depressing and made you feel like you would never be happy again, almost like a dementor was around. The feeling of despair felt familiar though so I don't think I was as bothered by it as Ethan. Ethan reminded me a bit of a zombie, not like the undead one but the one who just wanders around with no purpose.
I was focused on Ethan and the almost calming music that I hadn't noticed that the entrance had opened. Alex stopped playing and after a moment or two Ethan snapped out of it.
"Would you quit doing that!" He said angrily
"Cut it out you two." I snapped to Alex and Ethan who were staring daggers at each other.
They grumbled but followed, Alex coming up in the back. I walked down a dark and dank staircase, after going a few steps we were consumed by darkness.
"Step, step, step, step..." I whispered, trying to keep myself from falling. We went down for what seemed like an hour when we suddenly exited into the underworld. Although it wasn't bright, the reddish light nearly blinded us compared to the overwhelming darkness.
Once I was able to see again I looked around. I could see Cerebrus guarding the entrance and all the ghost Coming through, it wasn't that busy, apparently people didn't feel like dying on a Monday. Ahead I could see the fields of punishment and the river Styx.
"Seems like a great place." I said, pointing at the black sand beach on the river of fire, seeing the edge fall into tartarus.
"Oh yeah really great, just don't be eaten by zombies, fall into any bodies of water, or be killed by any of the zillions of monsters." Ethan said sarcastically.
"Zillion isn't a real number." Alex said, seemingly still annoyed but I could tell she was really awestruck by the underworld.
"Ok, where should we start looking?" I said trying to find a starting point.
"Hmm, we should definitely start by the fields of punishment!" Alex said, not hiding her excitement very well.
"Yeah, that's a great idea!" I said, wanting to see the fields of punishment too.
"This is why I can't go anywhere with you guys." Ethan said shaking his head. "Besides, can't you just use your underworld sensing powers to find friagon?"
"I've only known I was a demigod for like four days, how am I supposed to know how to use all my powers?!" I said.
"Hey how about we ask that guy!" Alex said pointing to a guy pushing a rock up a hill.
I remembered him from Greek mythology but I couldn't remember his name. Oh well whatever.
"Hey boulder guy!" I yelled when we walked over to where the man was pushing the stone up the hill.
At first it seemed he didn't hear us but then he answered "My name is Sisyphus." He said sully not looking at us but focusing on the rock.
"Hey have you seen a dragon pass by here? Big, probably an icey blue, shoots ice flames." Ethan asked.
"Maybe I did, maybe I didn't." Sisyphus said. "It depend on how much energy I can put into remembering, which unfortunately is not much when I have to push this heavy boulder."
"Hey Ethan, could you momentarily make the boulder lighter if you had to?" I whispered to Ethan so Sisyphus wouldn't here us.
"Easy, why? What are you planning?" Ethan said cautiously.
"I'm planning on making a deal of course." I said with a devillish grin. "You know I could make that boulder lighter so you could remember more, and depending on what you remember I might be able to make it disappear entirely."
"Really? You could do that?" Sisyphus answered, excitement creeping into his voice. "Just who are you that you could do that?"
"I no one really just call me punishment queen." I don't know where that came from but as soon as I said it, it just felt right.
"Ok, I'll play your game punishment queen." Sisyphus said with a tone of fear and amusement.
"Ethan you heard him" I whispered under my breath not to let him on.
I could tell as soon as the boulder got lighter because the concentration and tension seemed to leave Sisyphus's face."Now I believe you have some remembering to do." I said in a superior tone.
"I didn't see no dragon but I did see a boy, he didn't look dead and he did mutter something about a dragon. He walked toward the caves of despair at the edge of tartarus (I know I made it up so what). Now about this boulder..." he said. The spell must have been wearing off based on his body language, it was getting tougher to stay in place. Wow, Ethan is really could with timing.
"Oh yeah well, I changed my mind. Enjoy your internal punishment and thanks for the help." I said skipping away (yes I actually did skip, it just seemed like the perfect thing to Fain innocence)."Remind me to never get on your bad side." Ethan said as we walked away, listening to Sisyphus curse our very souls.
"This is fun!" I said. "I could get used to this."
"How come I don't get to torment anyone?" Alex asked.
"Don't worry the next punished person we find you can torture to your heart's content. But until them let's try to find that dragon."With that we walked toward the edge of tartarus. Alex and I decide to take the scenic route through the fields of punishment, the screams of the tortured people like a hellenly (like heavenly) choir.
As we passed the river Styx, I noticed someone by the bank. I mean seeing ghost in the underworld wasn't very unusual but he just seemed more solid, even with his pasty vampire skin.
Very suddenly his head perked up and he whipped his head in our direction. My muscles tenced and I froze with my hand on my sword waiting to see if he would attack. He seemed to be in the same position as us but then seemed to relax a bit after a moment.
"You're from Camp Half-Blood aren't you?" The boy asked.
"Yes we are." I said cautiously. "My name's Raven, and this is Alex and Ethan."
"My name's Nico, Nico Diangelo, son of Hades." The boy said.
I made a choking noise on those last words. "Hades? You're a child of Hades? I am too." I said.
"Huh interesting..." Nico said. "I guess that makes three of us."
"Wait three?" I said with surprise.
"A girl named Hazel, she's a daughter of Pluto, the Roman form of Hades." Nico explained. "Anyway what are you three doing here?"
"Well we're on a quest to rescue the ice dragon, Friagon." I said, remembering that Alex and Ethan were still there.
"Well I guess this is where we part ways." Nico said. "Good luck with your quest little sis."
Ok, see you." I said. I wasn't really sure if I was supposed to give him a hug or what so we just kind of stood there staring at each other until he gave an awkward half hug and disappeared.
"Wow, you to are great at human interaction." Alex said sarcastically as we started toward the caves.
"Must be a child of Hades thing." I said shrugging although I was happy about meeting my brother.
