It was Thursday and another month has passed. I couldn’t help but think of the changes in my life. Last school year, more particularly the last few months of that school year, my routine has changed. I spend most of my time outside the house. School life suddenly wasn’t a routine. I enjoyed every second I was in school. The hard subjects became easy partly because Jane was there to inspire me to be better. When she left and when the school year ended, I have spent most of my days at home. That remained true for the start of this school year. For the past month, I wasn’t inspired at all. I forgot to mention that I’m taking Physics again this trimester, and even though I was ‘okay’ with the first few topics from last year, I’m having even more trouble now. We have a different professor and I do not know anyone from the class. I couldn’t help but look at my seatmate and see if Jane was there. But she isn’t. So I just look forward at going home and seeing Tam.
This “thinking about Jane” part is really starting to get to me. How can I think of Jane if I already have Tam in my life? I asked Lucas (dropping the Tam part) about it because there’s nobody else I can ask and he simply said “Dude, you are in school and you just had so memories about Jane when you were here, it will pass.”
Maybe Lucas was right, but I didn’t think of my ex the same way I have troubles with Jane. So I asked Lucas again and he said “Dude, you always see your ex everyday here in school, plus she’s ugly and Jane, well she’s a dime piece”.
“What is a dime piece?”
“A hottie, I think” He replied. “It’s a N…. linggo”
“You mean, Black American?”
“Don’t you go technical on me!”
“You know it’s rude to say that word when you ain’t black.”
“Alright, anyway, me and my girlfriend are going out to a party tonight, you should come.”
“I can’t, I have to be at home”.
“Dude, we never did anything cool for a month now, just come with us and if it’s not a good party, you can leave.” Lucas said.
“Alright”
That night, Lucas told me to meet me at the party, he was nice enough to write me the address. He told me that he needs to pick up his girlfriend. Once I arrived at the house of whoever’s party it is, I waited outside. I saw a few people come in, I even saw a few classmates of mine and I simply nodded at them. I have never been to this house before so I have to wait for Lucas. Luckily, I didn’t have to wait too long, Lucas arrived 10 minutes after I did and together with his girlfriend.
“Red, this is Clarice, Clarice, this is Red”. He introduced.
“Hey!” We both said at the same time.
“Jinx!” Lucas said. “Nobody talks unless I call your name”
“Jinx your butt” I replied.
“Haha.” Clarice giggled.
“What? Wait until your bad luck finds you!” He boasted
Well it wasn’t long before Clarice had her bad luck, upon entering the house, she stepped on a dog dung. As for me, it wasn’t until I we entered when my bad luck started to kick in.
“Hey Bob!” Lucas said. It was Bob, the pot user, my book report partner, the guy who used to owe me one but never had to patience to wait.
“Lucas and my man Red!” He greeted. “And who’s the pretty lady?”
“My girlfriend” Lucas said as he wrapped his arms around Clarice.
“Oh okay, hands off then! Anyway, you can get a beer from the kitchen, my room is off limits, besides that, no other rules” Bob replied.
