Back to the Future part IV

Part 5

Monday, October 26th, 1925, 8.45am

Scott and Suzy arrive head towards Hill Valley High School in the morning. Scott fiddles with his iPhone.

SCOTT
It's still scrambled. The future still hasn't been decided.

SUZY
You shouldn't keep looking at that; the battery will go flat.

Scott switches his phone off and puts it into his backpack. The pair arrive at the school.
They find it is just being built. There are construction workers busily building the school.

SCOTT 
Another dead end. The school isn’t even built yet. How are we gonna find out what happened to Clara? 

SUZY 
There must be an older school in the town. Any ideas?

Scott looks around, spies a nearby worker and calls out to him.

SCOTT
Hey buddy, can you help me please? 

WORKER
Yeah, what’s up kid? 

SCOTT 
I’m looking for the local school. Do you know where it is? 

The worker points down the road.

WORKER
Follow that road down there which leads towards Shonash Ravine. You’ll find it down there about half a mile before you reach it. 

SUZY 
Shonash Ravine? Where’s that? 

WORKER
Sorry, my mistake. It's now called Eastwood Ravine. They renamed it after someone who died when a train crashed into the ravine around forty years ago. The old folk of the town still call it by the old Indian name. 

SCOTT 
Yeah, I know where that is, thanks very much. 

The pair reach Hill Valley old school. Scott has been inside enquiring about Clara and is now leaving the building. A teacher watches him leave the site. He is the father of Gerald Strickland, the future principal.

SCOTT 
That guy is the double of the guy from the 7/11 in 1985. It must be his dad or something. You know that guy who they made a statue of at school? 

SUZY 
Oh yeah, I see what you mean. Any luck with finding Clara? 

SCOTT 
Not really. I eventually persuaded him to look through the files. He made a right fuss over it. I found out that Clara left the school in the late 1880s to have a baby. She didn’t go back after that. None of the teachers there today, were working here back then. 

SUZY 
We’re gonna have to get the DeLorean fixed ourselves somehow. Our main priorities are getting back to 1985 and then stop the accident so you get born. 

SCOTT 
And then what? If we don’t have the accident, we wouldn’t be stopping it, so we would have the accident again. 

SUZY 
Wouldn’t we have gone back to the future and never have got here in 1925? 

SCOTT 
Ourselves of two days ago would have gone to 2015, but where would that have left us in 1925? Would we just fade from existence? 

SUZY 
If we don’t think of something soon, that’s what’s going to happen to you. Whatever we do, we’ve got to get the DeLorean fixed. What’ll happen to your teenage Dad if we don’t get it back to 2015 so he can get back to 1985? 

SCOTT 
I’m getting confused. Dad mentioned paradoxes in his story. If things get too messed up the whole universe could unravel.

Suzy rolls her eyes and replies sarcastically.

SUZY
Only the universe? 

SCOTT 
Let’s go get something to eat in town. There’s a bakery in the square. The smell from there earlier was amazing.
