Away from all the rejoicing and happiness of this room, there was a very different atmosphere. Back in the town that they had left behind, Hans had figured out a way to get them. His friend Kurt had developed a romantic relationship with a French girl called Carolina. She was the daughter of the town mayor and they were both collaborators. Before the Germans had invaded France Angelique and Carolina had once been friends, but now…
Carolina had had many lovers, men who could further herself and her father in society. She was arrogant, shallow and vain. She did not like the person that she had become; sleeping her way to the top but it was to difficult for her to change her ways. With Kurt it was different though, he could get her nowhere, do nothing to better her position and yet she longed to be near him. She didn’t want him his power, for he had none to share, she wanted him for his love. She had never felt this way about anyone before, this emotion, this feeling was an entirely new experience for her, but new or not, it was still one that she could not just ignore. There was nothing that she wouldn’t do for him, nothing she would deny him, so when Kurt, Dieter, Brett and Hans came to her, explained their situation and asked her for her help, even though she had wanted to say no because Angelique had once been her friend and all of them were her fellow countrymen, she agreed to help the four Germans.
The following day she set out to the village in which she was sure that they were staying and knocked on the door to Ellenor’s house. The door opened and Ellenor inquired as to why she was there.
“I have heard that Henri Lietner is staying here.”
She was making it up as she went along but continued.
“Please, I want to talk to him.”
Ellenor nodded then closed the door. Carolina could hear her calling Henri who opened the door. He looked confused.
“Do I know you?”
Carolina nodded.
“I live in your village. I am Carolina, my father is Mayor Verbitain. I am sorry if I have disturbed you but I heard about your leg, that you had an accident so I wanted to see how you were and to give you this.”
She held out the box of cakes that she had brought with her.
“Oh, and is it true that you are part of the resistance?”
Henri jumped.
“I am sorry but I am going to have to go now. Thank you very much for the cakes and your concern, Adieu.”
Carolina drove back to where the four men were waiting.
“That is my part done. I have found out where they are and I refuse to anything more.”
Hans grabbed her and shook her.
“You refuse?”
He slapped her face. Kurt grabbed his arm.
“Hans, that was unnecessary. Carolina did this to help us and if she doesn’t want to do anything else then that is fine. She doesn’t have to.”
Hans sighed, he was annoyed but he didn’t want to get into a fight with one of his best friends.
“Alright then. I will do this myself. What is the address?”
