For a moment the silence engulfed the room but it was broken by a painful wail of mourning from Pamela after which she promptly collapsed onto a chair.
“No, not Richard, my baby, my poor baby, no it can’t have been him. It can’t have been you must be mistaken, he will come home I know he will, he can’t be dead, he isn’t.”
Then she leaned forwards and put her head in her hands. George and Jack came to her, Jack pulled up a chair and sat down next to her and took one of her hands in his while his dad moved behind her and put his arms around her.
Angelique made as if to go over to them but Harry held her back by putting his arms around her stomach. Angelique saw red and continually hit out at Harry’s restraining arms until he released her after which she returned to the chair and once again wrapped her arms around her stomach, then she began to rock backwards and forwards. Tears appeared in her eyes once more and when the Wrights noticed this they moved forward except for Pamela who stayed seated but raised her head and glared at Angelique, who inhaled deeply at the sight of Mrs. Wright’s face which seemed almost disfigured from the tears and her eyes had pure anger in them, she pointed a finger at Angelique.
“This is your fault. It’s your fault that my son is dead, you… you… French Hussy. Why don’t you just return to France, we don’t want your kind here.”
“Mum, don’t say that you know that this isn’t Angelique’s fault, you’re just looking for someone to blame.”
Pamela took a couple of deep breaths then wiped her eyes and leaned her head against the wall. She moved to put her hand on Angelique who flinched away.
“Angelique, I am sorry. Jack’s right I am looking for someone to blame, none of this is because of you, I am sorry if I upset you. Please forgive my behavior.”
Angelique nodded but remained where she was, with her arms still tightly wrapped around herself.
Harry noticed this and it was beginning to arouse his suspicions, why was this girl so protective of her stomach.
“Is there something that you are not telling us ma’am?”
Everyone looked at Angelique, and Jack moved towards her.
“Well is there?”
Angelique nodded.
“Yes, I should have told you all sooner. I am pregnant.”
“Is it Richard’s?”
“Of course it is.”
Pamela sighed with relief.
“Are you absolutely positive that you are pregnant?”
“Yes I am quite certain that I am going to have a baby. I mean I haven’t been to a doctor for them to confirm it yet because I have been rather busy but a woman knows when she is with child, doesn’t she, you should know that.”
