That night after school me, Hayley and Ashley went to the caffe. Ashley had to work for and hour and lock the place up. When she was at school her older sister ran the shop. We ordered drinks and I insisted on paying. To my surprise Hayley let me, seemingly ignoring her constant need to be stubborn. Everyone was out of the caffe bye quarter past four. Ashley locked up and we all went down to our spot on the beach. I had found the spot a few weeks ago. A patch of beach hidden behind some rock amour. You couldn't see it from the road either, because it was hidden by dense palm trees. Hayley had brought a large blanket and towels for us. I had brought the cooler for drinks and snacks.
I help the girls lay the blanket on the sand and I set out the drinks and snacks. I watched has Hayley pulled down her beach shorts to reveal her bikini bottoms, she pulled her vest top over her head and she had the matching top on. Ashley laughed and the covered her mouth with her hand, showing me that she never meant to laugh out loud. Hayley turn and looked at her. "What's funny?"
"Oh nothing just something my sister said".
"Okay".
"Want a drink Hay?" She shook her head and pointed to the sea, as she had a hair grip in her mouth. I turned trying my hardest to resist the temptation of watching her. She ran past us towards the beach. When she was gone Ashley was able to say what she wanted to. "You like her don't you?"
"No!" I denied. "Where just good friends". She smiled. "Yea, yea I have herd that before".
"I'm telling the truth". I said. Hayley shouted us to come in the water. I sat for a second. "You know you want to". Ashley teased me and pushed me with her shoulder. "Whatever". I said as I stood up and brushed sand of my shorts. I pulled my shirt over my head. "You coming?" I asked her. "No thanks I'm fine". I looked at her eyebrows raised. "It's boiling how are you fine". I put the work fine in quotations. "Honestly I'm used to the heat".
"Oh I get it your scared of the water, well that's fine".
"I am not!" She shouted as I ran of toward the sea. I dived right in, under the waves and slowly allowed my self to surface. I looked over to Ashley and she was shaking her head. "What was that about?" Hayley asked. "Oh nothing". Hayley ignored my ways of hiding things from her and dove under the water. Grabbing my ankle and dragging me under with her. We swam in and out of the coral for a while before heading back to the beach. Ashley was sat sining to her music of her phone. "Have fun?"
"The the waters amazing you should have come in".
"No thanks". She insisted. "And anyway I never brought my bikini".
"I don't mined". Hayley cut in the conversation. "Dimitri, stop being rude leave her alone she can come in another day. She through a bottle of water at me hard. So I squirted it at her. In a flash Ashley was a meter away. Me and Hayley looked at her. I laughed as she came back to sit down. Hayley didn't ask any questions....
The next day in science Diego tried to start a fight with me again, because I was making him wait to use the tap. I turned and splashed him with the water and I accidentally got some on Ashley. She ran off, out the door. I called after her saying I was sorry. Hayley wasn't in this class. So later that day I told her what had happened. She told me of for stooping to that jerks level in the first place. I told her what had happened and that Ashley hadn't returned to class. I had even picked up her bag, Hayley said she would give it back to her. I swear there's something fishy about that girl and water. Why would she be scared of it? Why run all the way to the toilets if she was? Why not just use and paper towel and dry it off? My mined was racing with a whole lot of reasonable explanations. "I swear there's something fishy about Ashley". I said trying to get Hayley to investigate with me. But her stubbornness had returned. So she put me off and kept walking.
Later that night while I was lied in bed I couldn't stop thinking about Ashley and the water. All the reasons I thought of earlier had come back to mined and I couldn't sleep as they raced round my head. I crossed them off on by one. Sacred of water, no. Allergic to salt, no. Why would a human be allergic to salt get a grip. And then it hit me she's no human, there is something fishy about her. The saying rang in my head. Something fishy about her literarily. Shes a fish well part fish anyway. The normal tap she was fine with the water, but the tap I was using contained salt the only on in the school that did. Only used it for experiments. I shot up out of bed and quickly crossed the hall way into Hayley's room.
I heard her groan. I closed the door behind me and sat on the side of her bed. "Hayley you awake?" I whispered. "Ye I am now no thanks to you". She answered a irritated tone to her voice along with that half asleep sound. "I figured it out".
"You figured what out?" She said while sitting up and switching on her bed lamp. "Why Ashley wouldn't come in the water with us".
"I thought we agreed you would drop that".
"No you agreed we would drop it, I mean think about it. What dose sea water contain?"
"Salt".
"And the water the splashed her is the only tap with water that contains what in it?"
"Salt so what, maybe she's allergic to salt".
"That's what I thought but then I started thinking how many humans do you know that are allergic to salt".
"None".
"Exactly it's almost impossible so what if she's not human, what if there's really something fishy about Ashley literally". Hayley gasp and her eyes widened. "I remember she did say she was good at swimming so she can't be scared of the water".
"No it's the salt, salt and natural water not water that has been cleaned by humans that wouldn't affect her but salt and natural water will".
"She's a mermaid". Hayley said. "I told you so". She rolled her eyes. "So what if she's a mermaid?" Hayley commented. "Well she will be affected by the full moon like us and she has super hearing like us and super smell and eyes and she can control elements like water, wind, earth and fire".
"She is of no threat and she's my only friend".
"Well I'm going to expose her".
"No then there would be a risk to us".
"I'm not stupid I just meant expose her to me and you no one else".
"You can't that's not very nice she doesn't know about us and you wouldn't want her too so leave her alone and let me sleep". I shook my head and left the room. I was going to expose her to me and Hayley wether Hayley agreed or not. I know it sounded mean but I was just being curious werewolves and mermaids rarely meet and I had never seen on before apart from when I was five. My real dad new of one in fact they where close friends he let me meet her and they took me swimming. That's how I learnt to swim. At the time I never new he was my real dad. I only found out my self when my farther did so that's the only real memory I have of him. Me, my dad the mermaid who's name I can not remember and my mam teaching me how to swim.
