Time stood still as Liam stared at the most beautiful creature he had ever laid his eyes on. She had auburn locks that framed her face perfectly. The need and instinct to protect and care for her was almost immediate. As he stared into her light grey eyes, he could see the same longing in them for him.

The vicious snarls and barks were almost muted to her as she gazed at her soulmate. It had a rich black mane which she knew was as soft as it looked and his eyes were a beautiful shade of forest green. Although Rhiannon had yet to see the wolf in his human form, she knew he would be everything she imagined him to be.

A shout from one of the leions made her look away abruptly. Hearing the soft whine coming from her wolf because of the lack of contact almost broke her. Suddenly, reality came crashing back and she could see with alarm that one of the leions, Quentin, had been bitten at the arm. He was two seconds away from retracting his deadly wings when a command from Rhiannon stopped him from attacking. She could also see that the wolves were being held back, albeit, not happily so.

'Irra, what's wrong?' Petrav contacted Rhiannon through her mind.

She numbly shook her head and turned back to the black wolf who was clearly radiating power. Obviously, he was the Alpha, and he was ordering his pack to back off. Rhiannon could see their discomfort doing so, but they obediently did it anyway.

The black wolf then trotted out of the clearing with a longing look in his eyes. Rhiannon knew without a doubt that she had the same look in her eyes. She only hoped no one else could see it.

"What's going on, Irra?" Kieren walked towards her and looked her in the eyes.

"I--"

"Quentin, how is it?" Rhiannon heard Lyson ask the wounded leion and she quickly rushed over to him.

"Let me see it," She commanded, and he unwillingly uncovered the horrible wound on his arm.

He was lucky the wolf that bit him missed any major arteries so the bleed wasn't as heavy. Still, it was a deep wound, and Rhiannon almost blanched at the sight of it. It looked like the wolf had bitten a chunk of flesh out.

Suddenly there was the sound of rustling and Rhiannon turned to see the most beautiful man she has ever laid eyes on. She knew immediately that he was her mate, and he surpassed all expectations she had ever held for him. He was also topless, and Rhiannon was fighting to cover the light blush that stained her cheeks.

"Is he hurt badly?" His voice was velvet to her ears and she wanted to hear it all day if she could.

The question only registered in her mind a few seconds after he spoke. Rhiannon felt a little hurt that she wasn't the first thing that came to his mind.

"I'm fine," Quentin said rudely, looking at her soulmate in distaste.

An protective anger suddenly came over her. She glared at Quentin who shrunk under her stare. Her mate looked unbothered, though, and walked towards her.

"And you are?" He breathed softly.

Rhiannon could not escape the questioning glances of her flight. She ignored them, for the man standing in front of her was far more important.

"Rhiannon," she answered softly.

"Liam," he said in the same tone.

Rhiannon could sense her flight's curiosity at the exchange that was happening. She was glad they didn't intrude.

"We're...," I drawled off looking at his enchanting eyes.

"You're my mate," he said firmly and Rhiannon could hear sharp intakes of breaths behind her.

She nodded and a hand grasped her shoulder.

"Irra, is what he's saying true?" She recognized the voice of Kieren.

A growl escaped Liam and she put it off as jealousy but couldn't help feeling proud at his possessiveness over her.

"Yes it is," I said and shrugged his hand off.

"It cannot happen," he stated lowly, and a surge of anger sparked in her.

"You would know better than to give me orders, Aro," she said quietly in a cold manner, making him flinch back.

He bowed his head respectfully and Rhiannon felt a little bad about how harsh she had acted towards him.

"My apologies, Irra. It's just that I've never seen an occurrence of this sort before. Both of you are of different species. Judging by his aura, I would say he's the Alpha. And you are our Irra," he said sincerely.

As much as she didn't want to admit it, what he said made sense and Rhiannon felt her heart break at the thought of having to choose between her flight or her mate.

"Wait. What are you guys talking about?" The voice of her mate said with concern and she looked at his beautiful face where his eyebrows were knit together in a frown.

His expression made it impossible to think and she knew she would have to get out of here if she were to make any rational decisions. Her flight seemed to understand her emotions because when she walked away painfully with her mate staring, they followed silently.

"Rhiannon, wait!" The way he said her name made her stop in her tracks and turn around.

"Where are you going?" Liam said with a broken look.

Knowing she would probably hate herself for saying this later, she looked down and said,"I...I need to think, Liam. Just for a while."

She thought she heard him purr when she said his name but shook it off as her imagination when she saw his bewildered look.

"No! I just found you. You can't leave now! What do you need to think about anyway? I'm your mate!" He said desperately and her heart clenched inside.

"I know. I know you are. I just...need to set my priorities straight. Don't worry. This won't be the last time you'll be seeing me," she added the last sentence for his comfort.

Liam still looked distressed but she could see he was not as upset as before. What she didn't tell him was that the next time they meet might be the last. She inhaled slowly and turned away from him unwillingly.

"When will I...see you again?" His voice hesitantly said.

"I don't know," she replied without turning back and walked out of the clearing faster than before. When she was out of the line of trees, she extracted her wings and flew alongside the wind.

Liam remained in the clearing, wondering why he had let the beautiful creature, his mate, go. He punched a tree in frustration but when he got no relief out of it, shifted into his black wolf and ran.
