CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN;;

I stayed in my car, holding my knees close to my chest as I silently counted to one hundred to remain calm. And when I finished, I started again. It was something I do to stop myself from thinking.

Not long after, there was a tap on my window. I tilt my head to see Zayn standing outside with a concern look on his face. I sniffed and wiped my wet cheeks with the back of my hand. I looked away, not wanting him to see me like this and hugged my knees tighter.

He opened the driver's side door and ducked his head in and I was hit with the smell of his cologne, smoke and saltwater. He placed a hand on my back and something about this simple gesture filled the hollow places inside me with reassurance.

I slowly turn my head to look at him, despite not wanting him to see how terrible I look. He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear and cupped my cheek with his hand. He looked at me, his eyes soft and whispers, "Let's get you home,"

I nod. Zayn helped me out of my car and felt nauseas. I wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my face into him. "I think I'm going to be sick,"

"Shh," He said, holding me against him. "It's going to be alright. I'm here now." I managed a little nod as I buried my face deeper in the crook of his neck. "Where's your car keys?"

I reached for the keys in the pocket of my jacket and as soon as I pull it out, I felt him taking it away from me. I hear the car door slam shut and the sound of beeping, indicating that it was safely locked so that I was able to get it towed tomorrow.

We got in his car that I have not seen before and he helped me put on my seatbelt. As soon as he got into the driver's seat, he drove the car around the corner and into the main road. The sound of music playing from the radio was soft and I felt calm again.

"Were you in the middle of a pool game?" I asked, remembering the sound of billiard balls colliding in the background during our brief phone conversation.

"I was winning a condo,"

"A condo?"

"One of those swank ones on the lake. I would have hated the place," He says and I nod, looking out the window. "Are you going to tell me what happened?"

At that question, my heart beat increased and I can feel myself panicking again. Ethan and David. Nephilim army. Rose. I need to find Rose to make sure that she is safe. I searched my pockets for my phone and I called Rose again and after the fourth ring, she answered.

"Rose, hello? Where are you?" I asked, my voice shaky and I can hear loud music from the background.

"Hello? Mia? I'm at a house party with Ethan and his friends,"

I shake my head, my worst nightmare. Rose is in danger and it's going to be on me. I can't let her get hurt twice because of me. I can never live with myself. "No, no, Rose. Listen to me, I need you to go home. Stay away from them,"

"Mia? Hello? Are you there? You're breaking up. I can't hear you. Hey!" Rose shouted into the background. "Hands off, okay? Off. Hello? Mia? Can you hear me?"

"Rose, where are you? I will come get you. What's the address?"

"What?" She shouted into the phone and I pull the phone away from my ear. "Wait, here comes Ethan. My knight in shining armour. He says we're going home,"

"Make sure you get home, Rose. And when you do, call me. I mean it."

"Mia--"

The line was cut off. I looked at my the screen and it was drained to black. It died. And it had to be when I'm in the middle of something important. I just hope she gets home safe.

"What's wrong, Angel?" Zayn asks and I can tell that it must be from the tone I had with Rose on the phone. "Is Rose okay?"

"I don't know," I mumble, playing with my fingers nervously. "Could you step on the gas, please?"

Minutes later we were on the highway, driving right along the cliff just above the ocean. I had been this way before and when the sun was out, the water was slate blue with patches of dark green where the water reflected the evergreens. It was night and the ocean was smooth black poison.

We were halfway between Creston and Easton, on a stretch of lush and unpopulated highway, when steam spewed suddenly from the hood of the car. I furrowed my eyebrows as I continued to stare at it. Zayn braked, easing the car to the roadside.

"Wait here," He says, swinging out.

I watched as he lifted the hood of the car and he disappeared out of sight. A minute later he dropped the hood back in place, brushing his hands on his pants. He came round my window and gestured for me to lower it.

I did as I was told and he says, "Bad news. It's the engine,"

"It won't move?"

"Not unless we push it,"

"Where's your phone? I need to make a call to Rose to know that she is safe,"

Zayn reached in his pockets and grabbed his phone out, handing it to me. I pressed on the button and it showed that it was low on battery. We could use it to call for a cab but I didn't care at the moment.

The only thing that mattered to me now was that I needed to know that Rose was home and that she was safe.

I dialled her number and waited. On the second ring, she answered, "Hello?"

"Rose, it's me. Are you home?"

"Mia? Who's phone are using? And yeah, I'm home. Ethan dropped me off--"

The line was cut off again. I handed the phone back to him and I felt like I could breathe again. Rose was home and she was safe. Nothing bad happened to her and that gave me a peace of mind.

I waited for Zayn to say that we could've used that last call for a cab home but he didn't say anything, except looking into the horizon. After a moment, he spoke up, "Two options. We can flag down a ride  or we can walk to the next exit and find a phone,"

I stepped out of the car, shutting the door with force behind me. I kicked the car right front tyre and I knew I was using my anger to mask my fear of what I had uncovered today. As soon as I was all alone, I would break down crying.

"I think there's a motel at the next exit. I'll go c-call a c-cab," I say, my teeth chattering from the cold wind. "You wait here w-with the car,"

He cracked a smile, but it didn't look amused, "I'm not letting you out of my sight. You're looking a little deranged, Angel. We'll go together,"

I crossed my arm and stood up to him. In my converse shoes, my eyes came level to his shoulder which was no different to any other day. I was forced to tilt my neck back to meet his eyes, and say in a firm tone so I was less likely to change my mind, "I'm not going anywhere near a motel with you,"

"You think the two of us and a slummy motel make for a dangerous combination?"

Yes, actually.

Zayn leaned back against the car and looked up at the riotous sky then back to me and said, "We can sit here and argue this all night long but this storm is about to catch its second wind,"

As if mother nature wanted her say in the verdict, the sky opened and a thick mixture of rain and sleet hailed down. I sent Zayn my coldest look, then blew out an angry sigh.

As usual, he had a point.
