"Carissa, go get the fire wood, would ya."
I nod my head at my mother, my long brown curls bouncing at the movement. Standing I grab a small knife off the table, before heading out the door of my small home.
Walking through the village, I smile and wave at friends stopping every once in awhile to have small conversations.
"And where are you off to missy." Hearing the familiar deep voice a smile pulls at my lips, giggles erupting as strong arms wrap around me pulling me off the ground.
"Just to get wood, Papa." Still giggling in my father's arms I turn my head to the side pecking his cheek.
"Hmmm, I don't know can a little girl like you handle such a job?" Huffing at my fathers statement I answer him, my nose in the air proudly.
"I'm not little, Papa, I'm 7." Chuckling my father places my feet back on the ground kissing my head.
"Aye, you're getting to old it seems." Shaking my head at him I smile walking away telling him I'll be back in a little with the wood Mama needed.
Once I am away from the village, walking along the narrow path that winds through the woods, I begin humming and singing happily, picking up small logs as I go. So focused on my task the sudden raspy voice which calls out to me causes me to drop what is in my hands as I turn around quickly, eyes wide.
"What a lovely voice you have child." Staring at the short cloaked figure behind me I feel fear grip my small frame.
Every village has its own legends and spooky stories, ours is no exception. The story is simple and to the point, deep in the woods lives a hobbled old women. Once a kind and loving Mage she slowly fell into a pit of evil, becoming wicked and cruel. If she ever calls out to you it is already to late, for leaving her with no answer is certain death but, answering her only brings one a fate worse then death.
Swallowing the lump in my throat I answer her with a shaky thank you. Looking back I wonder if being silent was the better choice.
