The fighting had broken out. The battle was in full swing. The sounds of swords clashing together angrily filled the air, and the smell of blood and death was everywhere. I had been helping as many as I could. Just by aiming my hand, I still had the ability to throw a man twenty feet in the air, plenty of time to save the poor soul that had been fighting them. But I couldn't help everyone. Especially since Netiri had decided that now was the perfect time for our confrontation.
She had been standing back, a smile on her face as she had watched the blood and chaos ensue; it was almost as if she had been standing in a park watching happy children play. I couldn't believe that anyone could get a kick out of watching innocent people get slaughtered, but then again, I was fast learning just how evil Netiri really was.
I watched as she walked casually towards me. Occasionally her eyes would flick to the side as she watched someone get killed, and it would only bring a smile to her lips. I shook my head in disgust. This was war and she was relishing it.
As if in slow motion, I watched as she lifted her finger at a couple of rebels fighting for their lives and aimed. My eyes widened as I realized her intention, and I threw my own arm out and blocked her spell just before it reached her target. As soon as she realized what I had done, she returned her attention to me with a lazy expression on her beautiful face.
"Well, well," she drawled. "She does have some tricks up her sleeve after all."
"I've got a lot more," I retorted, feeling the anger begin to build inside me. "Would you like to see?"
Without waiting, I threw a spell at her with both hands, but she threw up her own hands and blocked it just before it reached her. Gritting my teeth, I tried again, but again, it was unsuccessful.
Netiri's eyes narrowed at me dangerously. "Keep it up and I'll start getting annoyed," she said, her voice clipped with restrained anger.
I made a snorting noise as I threw yet another spell at her, only to have it blocked.
"On seconds thought," she said harshly. "Keep it up. Use up all of your energy. That way it should be more than easy for me to take you out. A little like squashing an ant. An annoying, pesky little ant." She gave a laugh, sounding like tinkling bells as she amused herself with her own little thought.
I clenched my hands at my sides to stop myself from throwing another spell at her. She was right. At the rate I was going, I was going to use up everything I had and be absolutely useless to everyone else.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Bronson fighting against four of Netiri's soldiers. As good a warrior as he was, I knew that he wasn't going to be able to keep it up for much longer. Though it was risky, I turned my attention away from a split second, just enough time for me to throw the soldiers away from Bronson. Unfortunately, it was also enough time for Netiri to throw a spell at me while I was too distracted to block. It impact of the spell threw me into the air, and I landed on my back a few feet from where I had been standing.
"So we meet again."
I looked up to see Netiri standing over me, her red eyes glowing triumphantly, and her mouth twisted into a sardonic smirk. With a horrified gasp, my eyes widened. I had heard those words before - straight out of my vision. Oh god! It was my vision!
"I can't believe you thought you would stand a chance against me," she sneered. She raised a finger and pointed it at me. I remembered in the vision I had closed my eyes at this point. Purposefully, I made sure I kept them open. If this vision had to come true, then I would have the tiny satisfaction of knowing that this small detail wasn't the same.
