Not Good Enough Part 2: Enough Yet? ~A Diggy Simmons Love Story~
{Chapter 19...Unthinkable}
Daniel. . . .
We were driving down the road. I was calm, but Aubrey was a little more worried. Once a red light appeared, I placed my hand on her thigh, making her look in my direction. I stared and saw the worry in her eyes. "Hey, I'm sure your mom is fine."
She gave me a side smile. Then her panicked expression hit her face once she turned away from me.
I pulled in to the hospital parking lot. Aubrey and I both got out the car then walked in to the hospital entrance. Aubrey stepped ahead of me then talked to the lady at the front desk. "Um, Michelle Watson?" Aubrey asked. The lady started typing on her desktop.
"Room 245 on the third floor ma'am."
"Thank you."
We walked in to the elevator and I pressed the 3 on the number pad. I looked down and saw Aubrey's foot tapping. I grabbed her then held her in my arms. "Babe, I promise she's fine." she nodded then let out a sigh of relief. I walked behind her then put my hands on her shoulders. I brought my mouth to her ear. "Everything's going to be okay."
I was praying that I was right. The last thing we needed was for Aubrey's mom to be seriously hurt. So much has been happening since this year started. It's like everything is falling before our eyes and we have no idea how to control it. First the situation with my job. Then the situation with Devin. Then her parents and the affair drama. I felt terrible because my wife was going through so much, and unfortunately, there was nothing I could do.
The elevator doors opened and we walked in to the hall. "Dan!" Aubrey and I turned and saw Ethan and Kim, with Ava in her arms. We walked over to them. I took Ava and noticed she was crying. "What's wrong princess?" she wiped her eyes.
"Nona looked scary." she whispered to me then sunk her head in to my chest. I sighed then rubbed her back. I kissed her on the cheek. "Its going to get better." I assured her then looked down at Aubrey. "Where's my mom?" asked Aubrey, even more frantic than she was before.
"She's in the room with a couple of doctors, can we talk for a second?" Kim asked then pulled her off to the side. "You and I need to talk too." I sighed then put Ava down in a waiting chair. She sniffled then started to lay her head down on the arm rest. We walked over to the side, but not too far because I needed to keep an eye on Ava. "Listen, if this is about what me and Aubrey did-"
"It's not, but...thank you for that."
"No I-, wait what?"
"I said thank you, but we'll talk about that later," he said. "But listen, I know you're probably thinking this is something that's gonna be okay in the next hour, but Aubrey's mom is really hurt." I sighed. "Well, what happened to her?" he shrugged. "The police won't tell us anything, they'll probably only talk to Aubrey."
"Damn it, I was just telling her how this isn't going to be that bad." I confessed. "Where is she?" he pointed to a door. I walked over and cracked it open. I couldn't see much, but I did see doctors and police standing around a hospital bed. Then I heard something that made my heart drop. Did the unthinkable just happen?
Aubrey. . . .
"You need to be honest with me for a second, is she okay?" Kim sighed then I saw her shed a tear. "I have no idea, she didn't look okay when I saw her," she answered. "Matter of fact, she looked really bad." I sighed then backed myself against a wall. "Did anybody tell you anything?" she shook her head.
I was getting worried...REALLY worried. I can't lose my mom. She's been my support system through everything. Ever since I was born until now. "Has anyone called my dad?" she nodded. "Yea, but he won't answer my calls or Ethan's." I rolled my eyes. I pulled my phone out of my purse then dialed his number. The phone rang three times, but nothing. I called again, but this time it only rang once. "Are you serious?" I mumbled to myself. I called back and got the answer machine.
"Hello? Dad? People have been calling you because mommy is hurt. I know you saw my calls, but for some reason you're deciding to ignore me. Just know that if you're not here for your real family...that's it on your conscience." I hung up the phone then put it back in my purse.
"Aubrey!" I turned around and saw Kim crying while Ethan held her. I walked over to Dan who looked really afraid. He sighed then a tear shed from his eyes. "What's wrong?" I asked then wrapped my arms around his neck. "It's your mom babe." I moved my arms then just looked up at him. "What? What about my mom? Where is she?" I asked, frantically. He pointed to a door. I walked over to it with him following me. When I walked in I saw my mom in the hospital bed. A continuous beeping noise filled the room. I felt like I was going to be sick. I looked over at a doctor standing in the corner. "I'm so sorry, we did everything we could-"
I walked over to the bed and rested my hand on my mom's. It was cold. "Mom?" I said, trying to wake her up. She didn't move. "Mom, please!" still, no reaction. I felt hands wrap around my body. Daniel kissed my neck as I sobbed. I looked down at my mom's lifeless body and just broke down.
I needed her more than anything...and now she's gone.
