The door swung open. The four Jonin filed in. The Hokage's presence was gone, but the room still felt like a vacuum. Kakashi took the lead, his posture slumped—he looked drained. Kurenai was pale; Asuma and Guy stood by the door like sentries.

They didn't waste time with pleasantries. Their eyes went straight to the bed.

"What did the doctor say, Sasuke?" Kakashi's voice was too soft. It grated on me.

I didn't move. I kept my shoulder squared, cutting off their line of sight to her. "Crucial forty-eight hours. Severe shock, starvation. They've got a baseline on the IV. If she doesn't hold fluids by day two, she's dead."

Kurenai drew a sharp breath. She looked like she wanted to reach out, but she stopped.

"Weight?" Asuma asked. He wasn't smoking—a waste of time to even consider it.

"Ninety-five pounds," I said. My jaw tightened. "She's lost more since then."

"And her mind?"

I looked down. Misaki hadn't blinked. She was staring right at me, ignoring the elite ninja behind me like they were furniture.

"She hears," I said, my voice flat. "But she isn't back. Any spike in her heart rate is a risk. So, keep the politics out of here. If any of you try to move her or use her as a tool, I'll kill you. I don't care who's watching."

Kakashi didn't argue. He just closed his eye and nodded. "We need to talk about the Chunin Exams. Three days left."

"I don't care."

"You have to," Asuma stepped forward. "If you drop out, the Council marks this room as a liability. If they decide she's a target, they'll put her in a containment cell you won't be able to reach. You staying in the spotlight is the only thing keeping the ANBU from turning this room into a prison."

My Curse Mark flared. *Boyfriends-out.* They didn't get it. They never got anything. "I'll fight," I said, the words bitter. I turned, letting my Sharingan flare just enough to make them feel the weight of it. "But I'm not leaving this room to train. I'm staying here until the forty-eight hours are up. No exceptions."

Kakashi sighed. "Understood."

I was staring at her when her fingers twitched. Her face, a blank mask, shifted. Her brows pulled in. Her eyes focused, narrowing with that specific, sharp irritation I knew from the academy. My heart hammered—a useless, violent thud. She wasn't gone. I smirked, leaning in, blocking the Jonin from seeing her. "See? I told you they were just background noise."

She didn't answer, but she rolled her eyes. The movement was so sharp, so her, that the air in my lungs finally returned. "She's conscious," Kurenai whispered. "She's stubborn," I corrected, not turning around. "Don't stare at her. She isn't a specimen."

The hospital was silent by 3:00 AM. I had fallen asleep, but woke up to the medic checking her. When the medic left, I stayed locked in, watching her. She was awake, but silent. Her hand moved against the sheet, tracing kanji. *Tired.* I didn't offer comfort. I just gripped her wrist, making her stop the movement. She looked at me, her eyes heavy. She started tracing again. *Sorry.*

I didn't flinch. I felt the heat rise in my chest, a cold, sharp anger—not at her, but at the situation. "Don't," I said, my voice low and dangerous. I squeezed her wrist. "You don't apologize for surviving. I was the one who failed to protect you from them. I was the one who played their game."

She stared at me, unblinded. Then, she moved her hand. Her finger ghosted over my palm, tracing the characters slowly, the friction burning against my skin.
