Past Sasuke's Pov
It's been three weeks since I woke up and had the curse mark sealed. When I finally regained consciousness, Misaki was nowhere to be seen. Before long, I was cleared to return home and told to rest for a few days, but my determination wouldn't allow me to sit around.
After one of the team's brief check-ins, I went to Kakashi-Sensei and asked for his help in preparing for the Chunin Exams. With some convincing, he agreed, and we spent two and a half weeks training in the mountains. During that time, I didn't see anyone from Team 7. I wasn't too worried about Naruto or Sakura, but there was a nagging feeling in my chest about not reaching out to Misaki.
During my training, Kakashi-Sensei taught me how to use the Chidori. The curse mark, however, limited my ability to use it consistently, restricting me to a maximum of two times a day without losing control. I'd leave before sunrise and return after sunset, and even though I was exhausted, I'd still try to spend time at her place. What struck me as strange was that she was never home. A few times I listened for her late at night, but there was nothing—like she'd never been there at all. I figured she was probably off training somewhere far from the village, avoiding interruptions, but deep down, I knew something wasn't right.
Allowing my judgment regarding the exams to cloud my actions proved to be my fatal mistake.

Present day
Kakashi-Sensei and I arrived at the arena where the Chunin Exams were taking place. I heard a few shocked gasps and exclamations of "Finally!" and "This is going to be good." Naruto stood a few feet away from me, appearing slightly battered from earlier battle.
I allowed a faint smirk to form as my gaze lifted to the crowd, spotting Sakura among the spectators, with Misaki seated beside her, arms crossed. Her eyes closed, as though she was resting. A sense of relief washed over me upon seeing her face for the first time in three weeks.
"What's your name?" the proctor asked. I kept my eyes on Misaki. "Sasuke Uchiha," I replied. At that moment, she finally opened her eyes and looked down at me. They seemed cold and distant at first, but I caught a trace of longing in them. 'Once this is over, I can finally talk to her again,' I thought. While Kakashi spoke with the proctor, I gave Misaki a small nod, letting her know we'd talk later. Her eyes softened, and she visibly relaxed. I turned my attention to Gaara.
Soon enough, Gaara and I were in position for our match. After the proctor went over the rules and formalities, we were told to begin.
??? POV
I was watching the fight between the Uchiha and the one-tailed Jinchuriki from the top of the stadium, staying off to the side, away from the crowd, to make sure nothing went wrong.
"Did you make sure the preparations on your end were completed?" a male voice echoed in my mind. Grimacing, I replied, "Yes, master... and if I may, is it really necessary to make her do this? I know her power is the key to keeping him off our backs, but she's just a kid—" My words were cut short as a searing pain shot up my back, and I bit back a yelp.
