Route 40 began at the edge of Olivine's harbor, where the road stopped pretending to be land.
Waves rolled against the pier, and the sea stretched wide enough that even Ethan stopped joking for a few seconds. Shade stood near the water with his bag slung over one shoulder, watching the distant current like he had crossed it many times and still respected it.
"Route 41 is probably more dangerous," Shade said, pointing toward the islands barely visible across the water. "The Whirl Islands are located there. The currents can twist around you before you realize the path changed, but I am pretty sure you can handle it."
Kris adjusted the Good Rod at her bag and looked toward the water with careful interest. "That sounds less like a road and more like a moving maze."
"That is why we are not rushing into the inner islands," East replied, already watching the water instead of the horizon. "Medicine first, safe route second, exploration later."
Lillie nodded while checking Lapras's Poké Ball. "We do not have the HM for Whirlpool yet, but we have Pokémon that can travel safely by Surf. We can stay on the outer route."
Shade smiled a little. "That is the right answer."
A woman near the harbor rail turned when she heard Shade. She wore a light traveling coat pinned with a feather charm, and the sea wind kept pulling at her hair as if Route 40 itself was trying to get her attention.
She looked at us with recognition rather than surprise. "Travelers following the outer Route 40 path?"
Kris's eyes sharpened first. "Wait. Are you one of the Week Siblings?"
The woman smiled. "So you have met some of my siblings already."
"Tuesday on Route 29, Friday on Route 32, Thursday on Route 36, and Sunday on Route 37," Lillie said, counting softly. "Tuscany, Frieda, Arthur, and Sunny."
"Then I am the fifth one your journey has found," the woman said. "Monica of Monday, waiting here on Route 40."
Ethan blinked at the sea, then at Monica. "Johto really does hide people by calendar."
Monica laughed gently and took a polished feather charm from her bag. "Each day has a route, and each route has a lesson. Mine is the Sharp Beak. Flying-type Pokémon can carry it to sharpen the strength of their Flying moves."
East looked at the feather before looking out at the wind over the waves. "Route 40 makes that make sense. A steady wing matters over water."
Monica placed the Sharp Beak into my hands. "The sea pulls sideways, the wind argues above it, and travelers who only watch the waves forget the sky. Let this remind you that safe passage often comes from reading both."
I accepted it carefully. "Thank you, Monica. We will use it responsibly."
Pikachu tilted his ears toward the feather charm. Pikachu's meaning came through clearly: "Wind item. Sky helps sea road."
Monica smiled as if she felt the thought even without hearing the exact words. "If you meet Wesley and Santos later, listen to what their routes teach too. My siblings and I do not give items only so they can sit in bags."
Lillie looked from the Sharp Beak to the waves. "Then Route 40 is part of Johto's rhythm too."
"Exactly," Monica said. "Travel safely, and do not let the largest mysteries make you miss the smaller blessings."
I put the Sharp Beak away with the other important route gifts. It felt wrong to treat it like a side reward. Johto had been speaking through Gym Leaders, ruins, towers, Pokémon, and now even weekday travelers standing at the edge of the sea.
