Union Cave waited at the end of Route 32 like a dark mouth in the hillside. Cool air drifted from the entrance and brushed over my face, carrying wet stone, underground water, and the strange old stillness caves always seemed to keep hidden inside them.
The road behind us still felt full of sunlight from Solar Town. Reisa's Solar Ribbon was packed safely away, Hoppip floated above my head whenever the breeze lifted it, and Wooper kept trying to wander toward every puddle until Lillie gently steered it back with patient hands.
Ethan shifted the Egg case against his chest and stared into the entrance.
"So this is Union Cave," Ethan said, trying to sound casual while he held the Egg like he expected the darkness to challenge it.
Kris checked her map and Professor Elm's notes again.
"It connects Route 32 to Route 33," Kris said. "Some lower passages lead toward water chambers and older side tunnels, but we only need the main crossing."
East stood near the entrance without stepping fully inside. Noctowl watched from beside him, while Zubat clung beneath his pack strap with its ears already twitching toward the darkness.
"This is not open-sky navigation," East said. "Noctowl can help in wide chambers, but Zubat should lead in tight tunnels."
Zubat lifted its head and gave a quick eager cry. Lillie and I caught the meaning together: "Air bends inside. Stone remembers footsteps. I can hear where the safe spaces breathe."
East could not hear those words, but he watched Zubat carefully and nodded.
"You hear the tunnel shape already," East said.
Zubat chirped proudly at the praise.
Sentret hopped out of her Poké Ball without being called. Her nose twitched, her whiskers trembled, and her tail rose like a tiny warning flag. Her meaning came in fast pulses: "Narrow path. Wrong wind. Small can go where big cannot."
"You want to help guide too?" I asked.
Sentret nodded so hard her whole body bounced.
Pikachu leaned from my shoulder and gave her an encouraging spark. His meaning came warmly: "Small warnings saved us before."
Sentret's tail stiffened with pride, and Lillie smiled at her.
"Then we go carefully," Lillie said. "You and Zubat can lead."
Beside her, Chikorita turned her leaf toward the cave with a frown that made it clear she distrusted dark places on principle. Her meaning brushed against me softly but firmly: "Dark places hide falls. Stay where I can see you."
"I will stay close," I promised.
Then our whole group stepped into Union Cave together.
The first tunnel sloped downward gently, and the daylight behind us faded one step at a time. East's Mareep walked near the front with its tail glowing softly against the cave walls. The light was not as strong as Flash, but it was steady enough to guide us without startling every cave Pokémon at once.
Zubat flew ahead in short scouting bursts, never too far from East. Sentret stayed low to the ground, pausing whenever the stone sounded hollow beneath her paws. Between them, the cave already felt less blind than it would have otherwise.
East kept one hand near the wall.
"Left side narrows," East said. "Right side has moving air."
Kris checked the map and glanced ahead.
"Right should stay closer to the main route," Kris said.
Zubat cried once from the darkness.
"Zubat agrees," I said. "It says the right tunnel breathes, and the left one feels sealed."
