It was finally night and my parents were nearly asleep. Mckenzie tried to hide the excitement but kept jumping off the walls.
"Just be calm and quiet so mom and dad can fall asleep already!" I told her.
"Ok," she finally said and plopped on my bed. I braided her hair a crossed the side of her head all the way around her head. I dropped the hair that was getting too short and picked up another strand as I went around. She didn't mind when I did this, she liked seeing what her outcome look was. I told her too stay put when I was done so I could go see if they were asleep. I went out to the kitchen to pretend I was getting a drink and looked in the way back.
Dead asleep.
I told Mckenzie too be quiet and follow me too the kitchen. She got a couple bowls and plates and pans and put them in a suit case. I grabbed food and crammed it in. I think we were ready.
But I wanted too be sure we have EVERYTHING we could use. So I went room too room.
I finally made it too my parents room and stole some cash from there wallets. I didn't count how much I had but I would be fine. I had something at least. It's not like this would last forever. We were coming back, not that we couldn't stay...
But I couldn't do that too Mckenzie. She needed school. And other things kids need at her age. But anyway, I got Mckenzie and the two dogs and took them outside too the shed. I opened the door too see my dog sled siting there. I loved using it, but I couldn't. I'd be taking the four wheeler while the dogs followed with Mckenzie on the sled. They didn't have too be on the sled too follow it, they love chasing it.
We put the bags on the sled and covered it with a tarp. I put Mckenzie on the steering and put a bungee cord around the back of her and hooked it too the sides of the sled beside her so she wouldn't fall. I hooked up the dogs and put the extra dog harnesses in the sled. I took a look at the field behind the house. Even though it was still dark I could still see the two horses. Starbucks and Shasta.
They meant the world too me.
We'll come back for them, I assured myself. I opened the garage and pulled pushed the four wheeler out so it at least didn't echo in the garage. I then did one of the last steps too my plan.
I went inside and grabbed the phone and dialed 911.
I told the one who answered about my father and mother. I told her a fake name and Mckenzie a fake name. I told them the address and they said they'd be there in a few minutes.
I ran out of the house and hopped on the four wheeler and turned the key. "Ready Mckenzie?" I called back before I started the four wheeler all the way. She nodded excitedly. I turned it all the way and got going. It was still a little dark. I checked my phone, 3:27. I kept going as the dogs were pretty close too the back of the four wheeler. I turned off the choke and sped forward. I tried too goo faster then the dogs so the snow wouldn't kick up at them but close enough they wouldn't loose me. I knew the police would be at the house soon so I had too get them there fast. I came upon the jump wich I was half expecting sense I rode in the same place I am all the time. The dogs easily ran over it with the sled sliding down after them. I was relieved when me eyes saw the pine woods ahead. The best place too be. I slowed down a little bit so I didn't run into a tree. As we where a few yards in I saw where we were headed. The fort. I parked the four wheeler next too the small shack we made by four trees as wood was nailed into the trees so they didn't fall and they had tarp on all they sides. I unhooked the dogs and Mckenzie from the sled. The dogs didn't go anywhere unless they knew they were aloud.
"What did you go inside and then run out when we left?" Mckenzie asked me. "I called the cops so mom and dad are arrested." I told her. She seemed relieved about that. I looked up and in between the pine beaches I could see the storm clouds gathering.
"Come on," I told Mckenzie, "get in the hideout and let's set up." I told her and we unpacked the bags and took them into the fort. I had a door sense we had taken it from the garage and put it on. I went outside too check the weather and it was starting too snow. I called Ace into the fort and told Mckenzie I was going too find leaves and moss before the storm. Ace stayed with her for protection and I took Hazel for my own.
I walked around the trees and the moss and leaves in a basket that I carried around too hold it in. After it was more then full, I took it too the fort as me and Mckenzie stuffed it in between the sticks for installation. We put or sleeping bags right next to each other, and all there blankets over top. The dogs bed were on our feet too keep them warm. It was about 4:00 in the morning now, so I went out side too re- set up the fire place so it was bigger. I dug a somewhat big hole in the ground and surrounded it with rocks.
I went back inside with a few thick prices of sticks and hammered them into the corner of the cabin too make a shelf. Once it was done, I put the bandaids on it. As the morning light came, I grabbed my basket and headed out too hopefully find some fire wood before the storm was strong.
