Year ????
"To be strong is to survive."
"And to survive is to be strong."
"Good, do you get it?" The student shook his head.
"No, I still don't get why you burned their tower down, mentor." The mentor sighed.
"Well, it's because they messed with us. And they thought they can get away with it."
"But did you have to kill them?"
"I only killed half."
"Still one too many people." The mentor sighed again.
He laid down, but he can still see the burning tower as because they're on a slope of a hill. The tower used to be a base of operations for a powerful wizard faction, until recently.
The people there thought they could kill the mentor. Even loudly proclaim it to the masses of many kingdoms. They displayed their skill, their prowess. Their supposed unstoppable power and immense knowledge. They bragged saying one of theirs could ruin an army, even a kingdom.
This, of course, offended the mentor. To which he marched with his student and put them in their place.
"Well, I killed half to show them of my capability, the other half lived to spread the word. That way less people messes with me."
"But wouldn't that cause trouble for you still?" The student would have been right, there are law keepers, bounty hunters, a whole variety of people. If it wasn't for the fact that there aren't anyone left strong enough to challenge him. Well, there are the gods but... A mortal against one isn't really a challenge. There are also the foolish, just like the fools who used to live in that tower. And well, you can see what happens to those kind people.
"Don't think about it too hard, boy." I the mentor pat the student's head, but he brushed the mentor's hand away.
"What if they come back for the people that you care about?"
"I have none."
"What about me?" The mentor hesitated to answer the student.
"That's why I'm teaching you, so you can be strong too. And that way you can get out of any trouble." The mentor pat the student's head again. But this time, the student didn't brush his hand off. The mentor stood up and started walking away.
"Is that so?" The student asked as he followed.
"It really is."
"Mentor."
"Student?"
"If wouldn't those that you spare become strong? Because they survived?"
"Yes, but it's up to them if they'll use their survival to train up."
"What about the people that were put in a coma?" The student has a point. The mentor could only scratch his head.
"Well, there's still a possibility of waking up."
After walking a couple more minutes, the student asked again.
"What about those that are blind, deaf, mute, lost all their limbs, cannot use magic, has a weak body, and malnourished all at the same time?"
The mentor looked at the student with a poker face before trying to use his right hand to smack him in the back of the head. The student evaded to the left, but the the mentor's right hand was a actually a faint. And a left handed smack connected on the student's head.
"You're just messing with me now." The student is now the one scratching his head.
"Yup!"
The mentor looked at his student smugly grinning and skipping even after getting smacked. He cannot help but chuckle. Training a student doesn't seem to be a waste of time after all. Or maybe he just lucked out in one. His student may be cheeky, but promises talent.
With this speed of growth, it will only take less than a decade to turn this young boy into something that would leave a mark in the world. The mentor could only hope that the following years would give him enough time to steel the boy so that the student may not be brought down by the cruelty of this world.
"To have a world so beautiful and yet its people's actions be ugly. It truly is the most unfortunate thing." The mentor said in the air.
"Really?"
"Yes. I wholeheartedly believe that we, the people, are the worst creations that the gods made in this world."
"Why?"
"Because we have free will. We are not animals that only worries about survival nor are we grim that only cares about destruction. We have ego and free of our basic instinct, the only one with the ability to pursue more that just needs but also luxury, and the choice to do both good and bad." The mentor took a sip from his flask, not alcohol of course. Not anymore, he doesn't want his student to pick up his bad habits. "Yet we always choose the latter."
"I think it's fine."
"Really?"
"Yeah, because if humanity is the worst and we can pursue more than our needs, we can strive for more, something better."
"You sure you don't want to be a philosopher? You'd do well writing those thoughts of yours"
"You haven't even taught me how to read words yet."
"Oh, right."
They then went onto their merry way.

It has been quite long. Too many are the years to even count since the student and his mentor has parted ways. Right now the student already has his own. He can only reminisce of his olden days with his mentor as the new generation display their talents on the screen.
After some time, being satisfied not only to the overall display of the new students, but especially to the performance of his very new ace. The student looked forward to their development as he prepared to leave.
"Glynda, let's go back to the gymnasium, we're done here."
"Yes, Professor Ozpin."

(I've had an epiphany. I only realized this after reading my own chapters but... 2k words still feels kind of small.
I initially, waaaay back a few years ago thought that 2k words is already too long. But maybe because of all the typing I had to do. Case studies, coding, or even normal essays, 2k is actually a small number especially to stories.
Okay maybe because I haven't really read any books in wattpad for the last few years and only read Light Novels therefore giving me a distorted view because LN and Wattpad novels have different standards of length. But the pacing seems kind of too quick no? Or is it just me? I mean, look at this. The chapter is basically only one scene but it's already reaching 1k words.
So now I'm not gonna make any promises, but if I continue getting ideas and keep getting the guts for it I think I'll be able to expedite pumping out chapters. Eh?)
