The first thing Haerin woke up to was a pounding headache.
Groaning, she rolled to her side only to be greeted by the (thankfully carpeted) floor. The landing had jostled her awake enough to register her throbbing temples and dry mouth.
Her throat felt like she had swallowed sand, her bones rattled as she kicked the blanket off, and her head really hurt like a bitch.
Gradually, the memory trickled back to her, explaining why her body felt so stiff.
Last night was Minji's birthday and she had decided to celebrate. That meant holding a great feast for all of her friends, partying all night long.
It had been fun, but between those tequila shots and some good cocktails, Haerin couldn't remember how she had returned to her house unscathed and blacked out on her couch.
Squinting her eyes open, Haerin was glad the curtains had dimmed the living room, saving her from the peril of having the sunlight searing her retinae.
"Ugh," She groaned again, feeling mildly nauseous at the staleness in her mouth. She was still dressed in her dirty clothes, even.
"Oh, you're awake."
Haerin blinked and looked up at her friend, Hyein, blearily downing the water and Aspirin when they were given to her before getting up from the floor. Resting an elbow on the backrest, Haerin stroked her temple and grimaced.
"Hyein," She sighed. "Not that I'm not happy to see you first thing in the morning, but why are you here?"
"Unnie, it's already eleven. And you knew it was my turn to deliver everyone home this morning," Hyein moved to open the curtains before raising an eyebrow at her.
"Don't tell me the tequilas had turned you into a goldfish already?"
"Give me a break," Haerin slumped back in her seat, clicking her tongue. "I do remember most of it, okay?"
They had partied until five in the morning and Haerin had blacked out during a gossip session she was having with her friends. Anything after that was totally unknown to her.
"Then I hope you still remember your responsibility," Hyein smirked and jerked her chin at the air mattress set by the kitchen counter.
Haerin looked at the lump lying on it, brows furrowing as she spotted a flash of blonde hair peeking through the bundle of pillows and blankets.
"Did I bring someone back?"
"Yeah, but not in the way you're thinking," Hyein rolled her eyes.
Haerin blinked owlishly, confused.
"I'm not sure if I'm following.."
"Go on," Hyein sat down beside her and gestured at the mattress. "Go unwrap your gift. You'll understand what I mean."
Though Haerin had a bad feeling about it, she still stood up from the couch and walked over to the mattress, squatting down beside it and lifting the blanket.
Breath caught in her throat, she took in the fuzzy floppy ears sitting on a head full of silky blonde hair, small nose, long eyelashes that tickled her heart, round rosy cheeks with a pink pouty mouth, and soft milky white fur.
Maybe she was still dreaming, because then, it would give her a good reason for why there was a puppy hybrid—drowning in her oversized pullover and seemingly nothing else—snoring soundly in her living room.
Maybe it was just a misunderstanding and Hyein didn't mean the puppy was her supposed responsibility.
Because Haerin was the last person who should be entrusted with a baby, let alone a puppy who barely looked anything older than twenty.
