I hated when my father's friends from across the world came for their secret meetings, so I just got out as early as I could and went to spend time downtown, I took the bus and walked around.

My father hated it when I took public transportation but it's not like I wanted his wolfie security watching my every step and reporting back to him, after my mom was killed in a battle with a rival pack he became more uptight about security and he wouldn't even let my little brother Devon leave the property even though he was eleven.

I'm seventeen though and I knew I could take care of myself, but I still missed my mom and the way she'd make holidays so special, I tried to still make them special for Devon.

I got a coffee from a café in Pike Place Market then got a seat inside that overlooked Elliott Bay, it reminded of when I was a kid and Devon was a baby, our parents would bring us down here on the weekends and we'd walk the market and my mom would get flowers and dad would let us get something from either Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory or the gelato shop a few doors down, now my dad hardly leaves our huge house in Magnolia.

I got another cup of coffee and walked up Pike street and thought about seeing a movie, it would kill some time but there was nothing playing that I wanted to see, so I went to the shopping center a couple streets over and walked around Nordstrom's thinking about getting another jacket.

I hated my dad's obnoxious friends, they always wanted to ask weird questions like when I think I'll be ready to produce heirs and stuff like that, from the time I was a child my mother told me I was born into a powerful werewolf line that needed to continue.

They had been telling me since I was seven that they already had someone lined up for me to marry, he too was from a powerful line and it was supposed to make the next generation more powerful.

That's what I've been trying to avoid the visit that will bring me my future mate as dad put it, it was basically an arranged marriage and I didn't like that, what if we didn't get along, I'm not about to cow to some guy.

I was just about to go into Sephora when a big black SUV pulled  up next to me and someone tapped my shoulder from behind.

"How did you find me Jackson?" I said.

"Avery I've been your assigned protector since you were still in your mommy's womb, I know where you would go" he said.

"Did you have to dress like your about to fight someone" I said.

To everyone around us he was just in all black, but I could the weapons hidden throughout his clothes.

"Tensions are high and you didn't ask permission to leave this morning, you knew the council was coming including your betrothed, your father is up the wall let's go" he said.

I got in the back as he went around the other side and got in the passenger seat.

"Hey Isaac" I said, he had been my driver since I've been in school.

I put my headphones in as we made the long drive to Magnolia, one thing I learned from an early age was that I wasn't allowed to talk to them so they could hear everything outside of the car in case someone tried to attack our car, which is why I knew they wouldn't care if I listened to music the whole way home.

There was a stone fence all around our house because my parents bought it that way after my dad moved out of his parents in Wenatchee, both my parents had a huge inheritance from their parents some of which was invested to grow their portfolios, when my mother was killed everything of hers was divided and put into bank accounts for me and my brother.

The gates opened automatically upon our approach and Isaac dropped me off out front while they went to park in the garage, great I thought they were supposed to protect me but I guess they protect me from everything but my father's wrath.
