Marcy swallowed hard, forcing her posture straight. She attempted to speak in a calm, measured manner, but the words tore out of her throat, rough and jagged. "And what of the other complications?"
The question hung heavily in the air. She didn't need to spell it out; she was insinuating the worst-case scenarios. She was talking about me losing control, about the horrific possibility of me ripping the new heart right out of my own ribcage, or worse, my body rejecting it and plunging me back into the terrifying, pitch-black blindness I had barely escaped. It was the absolute elephant in the room, and she had just ruthlessly dragged it into the light.
Slender Man offered a slow, deliberate nod. "There is always a risk in everything we do, Marcy. You know this better than anyone in this mansion."
Even without eyes, the sudden shift in the room's energy was palpable. We could all tell he was side-eying her, a silent but devastating reminder of her own past choices—specifically, her rogue act of finding me and dragging me into this world in the first place.
Marcy visibly shrank back into her seat, the fight draining from her as the weight of his words hit home."However," Slender Man continued, his telepathic voice dropping into a softer, almost soothing register that did little to ease the tension, "there will be strict precautions taken to try and avoid any possible danger."
"We will utilize a specialized stasis field to buffer any sudden neural rejections," Slender Man explained, his voice echoing with absolute authority as he concluded the briefing. "Molly will remain conscious, but her motor functions will be completely immobilized. Hobo, you will oversee the transfer of the core energy."
Hobo Heart nodded firmly, his grip on my hand steady. "I am ready. Whatever it takes to keep her safe."
Marcy took a shaky breath, her eyes darting between us. "If anything shifts—if her vitals drop even a fraction—you stop. Agreed?"
"Agreed," Hobo replied softly. With the terms set, the heavy oak doors opened, and we made our way down the twisting, subterranean corridors toward the medical wing.
Inside the operating room, the blindingly sterile white light slapped me across the face. Standing around the steel table were Dr. Smiley, Nurse Ann, Dr. Locklear, and Jason the Toymaker. None of them asked questions. Their posture was rigid, their expressions grim and clinical; it was obvious Slender Man had already briefed them entirely via a swift, telepathic command.
Hobo Heart stepped forward, gently hoisting me onto the cold operating table. My legs felt like lead, but his hands were steadying as he helped me lie back. Marcy retreated to the perimeter, hovering nervously off to the side, her fingers nervously pleating the fabric of her shirt.
A moment later, the heavy metal door hissed open, and Laughing Jack walked in. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly, growing thick and suffocatingly cold. He didn't look at the doctors. He went straight for Marcy, and even from across the room, I could overhear their harsh, whispered exchange.
"Why didn't you tell me she was here sooner?" Jack hissed, the absolute lowest register of his voice carrying a terrifying, volatile hint of anger.
"I'm sorry. I wanted to," Marcy's voice was shaking, vibrating not with fear of Jack, but with sheer, overwhelming worry. "But you were on a mission, and Slender refused to let me tell you."
"And since when did you follow his rules?" Jack struggled to keep his voice down, his monochromatic frame towering over her, his long fingers twitching. "You sought out our daughter and didn't tell me until she was ten!"
"Since he punished me, Jack!" The sharp bite of tears finally broke through Marcy's voice, raw and bleeding.
Jack froze. His entire demeanor shifted, his voice dropping into a dangerously cold, predatory whisper. "Wait. He what? When?"
I shifted my head slightly on the metal table, looking past the doctors to watch them. Marcy was staring fixedly at the floorboards, her shoulders trembling. Jack loomed over her like a dark cloud, the erratic energy radiating from him enough to make the fluorescent lights flicker.
"The day I told you Ben overheard me," she whispered, her voice fracturing. "Ben told Slender, and Slender immediately sent you on that month-long mission to get you out of the way. He... he tortured me, Jack. He made sure I would never, ever disobey him again."
The room went completely dead silent on their end. Jack didn't speak for a long time. The manic, terrifying aura around him suddenly collapsed into something heavy and mournful.
"And you let me yell at you when I got back..." Jack murmured, the words hollow with regret.
Before she could answer, he reached out, pulling her tightly against his chest. He buried his face in her hair, his long arms wrapping completely around her as he quietly mumbled a string of desperate, heartbroken apologies into the crown of her head. Marcy leaned into him, finally letting the weight of the secret go.
