I slowly fluttered my eyes open waking up with a sudden shake on my bed.

"Brook! Wake up! wake up!"

I sat up in bed to find Diamond greeting me with her bright smile. I admired her caramel skin and curly hair which resembled Annie's. I smiled at her enthusiasm of her first day of first grade. She's a lot like her dad was: my brother. It keeps me at peace knowing that he is, in some way, living through her.

"Brookie, you need to get up now!" She said while tugging on my arm.
"You have way too much energy in the morning!" I said while putting her in my lap and tickling her. She giggled trying to get out of the grip of my hands.
"C'mon baby girl, let's go get you ready for the day."

As I placed a bowl of cereal in front of Diamond, I couldn't help but think of my first day of work today. I've just gotten a new job as a receptionist for a modeling agency to replace my job as a waitress. As my parents get older, I didn't want to bother them with the burden of taking care of me and my niece; so as the adult I am, I decided to get a better paying job to support my niece and myself.

I sat across from Diamond drinking a cup of tea and going through Instagram until I got a call from my girl, Bria.

"Hey, boo." I answered with a smile.

"Hey girl! I wanted to check on you, make sure you weren't nervous for your first day."

I chuckled at her remark because she knew damn well I was nervous.

"Bri, stop playing. You know I'm nervous."

"Don't be. You'll be fine Brooklyn, you got this."

"Thanks Bria, that means a lot."

"How's my girl, Diamond?" She asked.

"She's good. Today is actually her first day of 1st grade." I looked up at Diamond who had a smile growing on her face knowing I was talking about her.

"My baby is getting too big! Tell her to stop growing." Bria laughed.

"I feel the exact same way girl."

"Well let me go, call me when you get home tonight."

"Will do, bye love." And with that, I hung up.

I cleaned up Diamond's bowl and my mug and brought her backpack and my keys to the front. I went through her bag one last time making sure she had everything for the day. When I packed her lunch and snack for today, I called her to the front door so we can go.
"Diamond, baby, time to go!" I shouted.
She ran to the door smiling and laughing, excited to start her day.
"You ready?" I asked opening the door.
"Yes!" She exclaimed.

As we pulled up to a parking spot after circling the parking lot several times, I could hear faint humming coming from the backseat. I turned around to find Diamond biting her lip in excitement and swinging her legs in her car seat.

"You ready, D?" I asked unbuckling my seatbelt.

"Ready!" She cooed.

I got of my seat and went around back to help Diamond get out of hers. I held her hand and her bag as we walked up the stairs into her new school.

"It's so big!" She exclaimed.

"Cause you're a big girl now." I replied.

We walked down a wide hallway until we came to Diamond's classroom: 218. As we walked in, kids and parents filled the room. Kids playing, parents conversing. A tall lady probably in her mid 50's came up to Diamond and I and greeted us with a warm smile.

"Good morning, sweetie! What's your name?" She asked Diamond, stooping down to her level.

"Diamond! Like the really, really nice  one!" She said with a smile.

"Nice to meet you, Diamond! I'm Mrs. Hunter. Is this your mommy?" She asked while standing up and straightening her skirt.

"Aunt." I corrected. "Nice to meet you, I'm Brooklyn Wolf." I said while shaking her hand.

"Well, nice to meet you Ms. Wolf." She smiled.

I turned to Diamond then picked her up and placed a kiss on her cheek.

"I'll be back to pick you up soon, okay?" I assured.

"Okay, bye Brook! I love you!" She said while wrapping her small arms around my neck.

"I love you too, baby girl."

I set her down and watched her run to a group of girls playing with Barbie's. I smiled and admired her.

"She's gonna be great, I promise." I whispered to myself.

"I promise."
