"So, Yukichin," he started as we walked home together, "you read my letter right?"
I had to swallow hard and breathe in as much as I could so I won't stutter and answer him. "Yes. Thank you for the nice thoughts." I answered him avoiding awkwardness.
"Sooo..." he asked as the sun started to orange out the sky as it set.
"So what?" I looked up at him and saw his profile. Then he caught me looking.
"What's your answer?" Everything stopped when he said that. There wasn't any question in that letter was there? so was he implying that in that letter, was actually an underlying question?
"A-answer to? There was no question on that letter you gave." I huffed wanting to avoid further conversation.
He chuckled, "you can be so stupid at times, Yukichin." Wow. Did he just really say that?
"There really wasn't. Don't call me stupid, Atsushi." My heart was beating faster and faster. I wanted to run away but its not like me. I tried to stay calm.
He stopped in his tracks. I was afraid to look back at him but I had to.
I looked back and stopped walking as well. He approached me with his large wide steps to lessen the space between us.
Cars passed by one by one and we just stood there looking at each other. "If you can't get the message, I guess I have to ask you directly." He said so seriously but still with some laziness.
He couldn't look into my eyes. He looked at the road. "Will you go out with me, Yukichin?" His words faded with the wind.
I wanted to answer but the words wouldn't come out of my mouth. I couldn't believe this was happening.
Then I realized, I'll be leaving for Korea. It pained me to know that we couldn't be. That his efforts were to be lost...
...That everything that has been realized just now, will never be.
I lowered my head. "This is all so sudden, Atsushi." I breathed. "I have to figure things out first. Alright?"
"Why not now. Don't you like me back? Is it because you like someone else? Is it because your brother told you?" Atsushi asked me like a little sulky kid as he grabbed me by my arm.
"It's not that." I shook my head, "you know I have a lot of things to do and I just can't handle both."
It was as if time stood still. His eyes were so deep and sad that moment that it made me regret that I had to leave.
we couldn't stay like that. I had to muster up courage to turn around, I breathed in.
"Let's go. It's getting late."
