"Hey! It's me. Where are you? I'm dying here!" I asked Liz on phone, walking around restlessly at the bus stop.
"I think we're pulling over right now. I see you!" she squealed in response.
I watched as Liza popped her head out of the window and waved at me frantically. She looked absolutely crazy. I couldn't stop smiling either as I saw her step out and rush over to hug me. We hugged each other for a long time with no words to exchange. We were just too happy to see each other after so long.
"How have you been? You look wonderful!" Liz exclaimed, taking the first to step to let go of the hug.
"Good, good. Better actually. You look crazy, Liz." I laughed, pointing at her messy hair and ruined makeup.
She agreed and we both started laughing. We got a cab and went to my place first. We had the house to ourselves this weekend. Ron and Jen went off for a romantic getaway and we had lots planned. As soon as we reached, she took a shower and dressed in her casuals. We went for lunch to my favourite fast food joint here.
We talked a lot about our schools and the new people we met. She was dating a guy from her school now and we spent the entire lunch time talking about him. I was very happy for her. She deserved it, especially after the heartbreak she went through with her previous boyfriend.
"So when do I get to meet the girls?" she asked me, leaning forward, her eyes sparkling.
"Tomorrow. We have a party at our neighbour's house, so everybody is going to be there."
"Awesome!" she clapped her hands excitedly.
We spent the rest of the day walking around and having long chats. We rented a horror movie and ordered pizza for dinner. The movie was lame and we ended up watching random episodes of FRIENDS instead.
"So how are you feeling, Ari?" she asked suddenly, in a low voice.
I thought about it myself. How was I feeling? I was definitely happy with the changes in my life but, there was something wrong too. I didn't know if I should tell her or not because I didn't want to spoil the mood we were in now.
"I'm okay." I said finally, shrugging and not looking at her face.
"Honestly, Ari. I know you."
I nodded lightly. "I don't know Liz. I am happy. I really am."
She switched off the television and sat in front of me on the table. I looked at her earnest face and I knew she was the only one I could speak to openly and that I had to but I didn't know what to say.
"Ari. I know you're happy and like it here. You look so sad and I can't stand it. At least tell me what's in your mind. You never know, I might be able to help you."
"You're right. I just feel like something's wrong, like I'm forgetting something. I feel empty even when I see a cute guy, Liz. I feel like I am doing something wrong or inappropriate."
"Ahha!" she exclaimed, crossing her legs and grinning at me. "So there's a guy!"
"What? No!" I pushed her off lightly. "That's not what I meant. That was an example!"
"Okay. So elaborate that example." She winked.
"I met this guy. He is Jen's cousin. There's nothing, absolutely nothing between us. I have zero feelings or even a crush on him, so get that straight first!" I flicked her forehead jokingly.
"Oww!" she laughed and urged me to continue.
"Yeh, so, I felt like I was doing something wrong by even talking to him!"
