I sit on the floor and lean on the metal wall, mentally preparing myself for possibly the next most annoying hour of my life, hoping to god that this isn't going to be an all day thing.
"Fcuking Hell, you just had to break the damn thing." She sat opposite from me, leaning her head back, her attention on the ceiling.
"How is this my fault?"
"This is sick even for someone like you, what are you? Some kind of reporter?"
"You have to be kidding me, you think I planned for this to happen?" She scoffs, avoiding eye contact.
"Just stay in your corner and I'll stay in mine." God this girl knows exactly how to wind me up. Does she really believe I will go to this extent just to get a story out of her? "Fine by me." I whisper before taking in a slow breath. I reach into my vest pocket located on both sides of my waist. I always find hidden treasures in these pockets. I pull out a pack of gum and pop one in my mouth. I look up and with a roll of her eyes she breaks eye contact.
"What's your problem? You don't even know me and you already hate me."
"Exactly, I don't know you and you obviously know who I am."
"What makes you think I know who you are?"
"The way you looked at us when you first walked in here. You were judging us weren't you?" She's studying my reaction, her rough tone tells me she isn't going to listen to my words. Her mind is already made up about me and I can see the hate in her eyes.
"Why would I judge you when I don't know anything about you, other than how rude you are to strangers."
"What are you in for anyways?"
"I'm not court ordered to be here if that's what your asking me." She scoffs.
"Right. Why would you willingly come here. These uniforms are hideous and there's absolutely nothing to do here."
"I should ask you the same question, what are you doing here?" She's quiet for a second and I think I've crossed some sort of line, like I've trespassed a forbidden ground she's been avoiding all day. Her voice is different now, soft and vulnerable in a way.
"I'm not gonna sit around and waste my energy trying to explain things you think are wrong with us."
"It's fine, you don't have to talk about anything you don't want to talk about." Its quiet again and I'm feeling a bit claustrophobic. I unbutton my vest and take it off, reveling my white v neck that we're required to wear as a part of the uniform. I can feel her eyes on me but I don't look up. I can't seem to figure her out. Why is she staring at me when she's made it quite clear that she wants nothing to do with me? And I can tell how people can become obsessed with her. I hate to say it but she's gorgeous, even though her personality doesn't quite match.
I look up and her eyes are fixed on my neck. She's staring at my scar. Sometimes I forget that its even there. I trace my fingers over it, quickly letting my hair down to cover it. We suddenly make eye contact. I clear my throat looking down at the lollipop in my hand. I feel the need to say something, anything just to stop her from melting me with her piercing glare.
"Maybe you should use your phone to call someone, see what's going on."
"I don't have it, they took it from us when me shift started."
"Your not allowed to use it?" she shakes her head and its quiet again.
"What's that on your neck?" I can tell she's been working up the courage to ask me because her voice is hesitant, soft. "I was sick when I was younger." I leave it at that, I really hate talking about it, especially to strangers who just what the satisfaction of knowing. "Are you okay now?" She takes me by surprise, so she does have a heart.
"Yea I'm fine...." I cant help but smile and I'm not entirely sure why. "...But I think I'm gonna go mad if we have to sit here all bloody night." I reach in my pocket remembering that I too have a phone. Just my luck, It's dead. "Ughhh." I bury my head into my hands. I hear the flick of a lighter and look up to see a cigarette in her mouth.
"What do you think your doing?"
"Having a smoke, you want one?"
"You can't smoke in here."
"We're stuck in a elevator, no way in, no way out. Whose going to stop me? ... You?" With the raise of an eye brow, she takes another long drag, blowing the smoke into perfect O's, contaminating the once clean air with dark puffs of smoke.
"You're gonna suffocate us in here Cheryl. I don't know if you remember but we're both in this elevator not only you." I reach over and grab the cigarette from her hand, twisting the glowing tip on the floor and swatting away the dark clouds from my face. She sat there, stunned by my actions. At first I thought she was gonna go off on me like the diva I think she is, but she doesn't. Instead she sits there watching me as I take out another gum from my pocket and pop it in my mouth. I feel the need to offer her one, risking the chance of her ignoring me again and extending my arm for her to reach for it. She takes one without a word. It's quiet for a moment.
"Actually I'm chockin' for a lollipop right about now." Her dimples, those famous dimples seeping deep into her cheeks as her smile makes it's first appearance. I look down at the lollipop on my lap and smile too, reaching over and dropping it into her hand.
"Do you hear that?" A crease forms in between her eye brows, her lips pursed together.
"What?"
"Shh.." I hear it now too. Its muffled voices.
"It's coming from above us." And then I hear the all too familiar voice.
"Kim! You down there?!"
"Sarah?!"
"Kim what the hell are you doing in there? I came to bring you some lunch and some girl told me you were stuck in the elevator."
"Oh you know Saz I'm just watching a movie, what do you think I'm doing? I'm stuck. I'm doing absolutely nothing."
"Geezz I'm just asking grumpy."
"Do you know whats going on Sarah? Are they fixing it? I'm starting to get really frustrated being in here."
"Yea they said it'll only be a couple minutes." Right on cue, the elevator starts to jerk back to life. We look at each other, smiling just as the elevator doors open. I'm surprised to see a lot more people than I expected.
"Kim! I kind of ate your-" Sarah's eyes go wide. I giggle, looking back at Cheryl who is now talking to one of her people I'm guessing.
"Lily, whats with all these people?!"
"Cheryl calm down, no one knows who you are come on, they said you can leave early today, I have the car waiting out back." their whispering to each other. I Pull the stunned Sarah to the opposite direction and wrap my arm around hers.
"Come on Sarah, stop staring."
"Was that?"
"Yes now come on lets go get something to eat." I look back. I catch her staring at me, a soft smile forming on her lips just as she turns the corner.
"Kim-"
"We'll talk in the car." I quickly walk up to the information desk where I see Nadine slowly standing up in her seat right at the moment she saw me.
"Kim you okay? I heard that there were a couple girls stuck in the elevator and I just found out one of them was you."
"Wow news spread fast around here huh? Yea i'm fine Nadine, I have a new fear of elevators but I'm fine." She laughs and looks at Sarah.
"Hiya I'm Nadine." I nudge Sarah who seems to be lost somewhere else.
"Huh?"
"Sarah this is Nadine, she works here with me."
"Oh yea, hi im Sarah"
"Yea I just told her that." I laugh before going back to Nadine.
"You should take the rest of the day off. Don't worry about me I'll just get someone else to cover for you."
"Are you sure? I don't mind staying."
"Yea go home, you look like you can use a breather."
"Thanks Diney! I owe you one." I give her a wink while pulling Sarah to the exit.
"If you keep calling me that I'm going to tell Justin you like him!"
"Go ahead Diney, I know its not true." I answer, my back facing her as I walk out of the hospital with Sarah in my arm.
"You better start explaining yourself."
"What do you mean?"
"Kim you know what I'm talking about. Why in the world, I mean how did Cheryl Cole, what is she even doing here?!" I giggle at her loss for words, pressing the button to open my car before opening it.
"What exactly was the question again?"
"Kim!"
"Okay okay , she does her community service hours here and we got stuck in the elevator while on my way back from delivering something to the lab."
"Do you realize you just lived through something millions of boys and chezbian girls dream about? I mean they would actually sell themselves to get stuck in an elevator with Cheryl Fcuking Cole!?"
"Chezbian?"
"Hey I'm as straight as can be but, lets face it, every girl is at least a little lezza for chezza."
"Speak for yourself. I thought she might have thought I was some kind of reporter, she was a complete b!tch when I first saw her."
"Oh my god tell me everything." I gave in, getting it over with knowing she would never let it go if I didn't. I stopped to get milk before deciding that we'd just pick up something and eat it at my house.
....
"I brought food!" I shouted right when we opened the front door.
"If you brought pizza again, I swear this whole family is going to eventually die of pizza poisoning." Adam walked down the sitars in a suit and tie. Both me and Sarah looked at each other in confusion.
"No I brought Chinese... Adam, what are you wearing?"
"Oh dad didn't tell you?" I placed the bags on the table and put the milk away.
"What?"
"He's making You Amy and I go to some fashion show next week. Something about representing the store and checking out new clothes. I'm just trying this bad boy on, seeing if it still fits."
"What about Sally?"
"She's the 'oldest' so she can do what ever she wants." He said with annoyance, sitting on the table and digging into the food, talking to Sarah as she was doing the same. I walked into the Kitchen to find my mom watching the dishes. I smiled before kissing her cheek.
"Hey mum, how was your day? I brought food, it's on the table."
"It was fine hun, just cleaned all day, you feel alright today? Nothing bothering you?"
"Yea I'm fine, you don't have to worry about me anymore mum."
"It's my job to worry Kimberley." She looked at me and smiled.
"I know but I'm a big girl now, come on leave the dishes and come eat. Where's dad?"
"Oh he had to work over time again. He's planning on opening up another store close by."
"Will Adam be working there?" I sat next to Adam, serving my mum first before serving myself. Sally and Amy were already there, eating like they've been starving all day.
"Why does everyone of us have to be working at the store? I don't even like clothes."
"What else have you got goin for ya Adam? You don't even go to school anymore. I think the store is the only option you have." Sally said with a laugh.
"Shut up, I'm still young, and I'm having fun right now, unlike you always kissing up to dad." Adam made kissing noises and Sally threw a piece of chicken at him with he happily picked up and threw it in his mouth.
...
The rest of that night was spent as a family, Sarah stayed most of the night as we all started watching movies. The next day started out like any other regular Saturday. In the morning I went to the store just to check up on the workers and how the sales were doing. After making sure everything was fine at the store, I go to the theater where I meet up with Sarah. Today is one of my favorite days at the theater. Every Saturday, the children come and get free lessons which me and Sarah volunteer to teach every week. I was just about to walk into the building when I received a text from a number I didn't know.
Kim?
