Chapter Seven

Kelsey was a pretty cool girl. At first she sort of looked at me with an annoyed, guarded expression and when I sat down across from her it was cautiously.

        “Hey Kelsey?” I asked.

        “Yeah, you are?”

“Ash,” I glanced over at Holly who flashed me an encouraging look as I gave her an amused look. “Okay, Holly wants me to talk to you about your song writing, if that’s cool with you.” Getting to the point was easier than skirting around lies of why I was talking to her.

Kelsey glanced behind her at Holly who wasn’t paying attention anymore but talking to Aaron, who was standing close with a hand on her shoulder. My stomach twisted into one of those knots you get when you really hate someone's guts but I tried to focus back on Kelsey.

“I don’t like talking about it. I usually keep it to myself, sorry,” She gave me a sympathetic look and pulled her worn notebook towards her, as if protecting it.

“That’s cool; we can talk about something else. I think Holly wants me to make friends. I have no clue why,” I shrugged, leaning back against the chair and spreading my legs out in front of me, crossing my arms over my chest.

Kelsey shrugged and we fell into an awkward silence as I heard Aaron and Holly whispering to each other across the room.

“I have a question,” Kelsey sat forward and placed her arms on the table, giving me an energetic look with her coal black eyes. I nodded for her to continue, “Why did your family move here?”

The question didn’t really catch me off guard; I was expecting someone to ask me at some point or another, “Well, I came from Georgia. My parents weren’t really getting along anymore and decided to get a divorce. So my mom moved us down here. And here we are.” It was easier to say they argued instead of hit and screamed and called each other cruel names.

Kelsey nodded and decided not to ask anything else about that, “There’s this party next weekend, just outside of town. It’s supposed to be really fun. The high school from Wendover is throwing it in a little clearing. Bonfires and boys, you want to come?”

Parties used to be my scene back home in Georgia, some of them were so crazy that the police actually came and had to break it up. I was never involved in the illegal drugs, except for maybe a try of it, but after the first time I had never done it again. I had promised myself I’d get through high school calmly now that I had moved and could change my reputation from the crazy, bi-sexual party-goer to a better person.

But I really needed to relax and maybe hanging out with Kelsey would help me make friends and feel a little bit more like home. I nodded, “Sure, I can go. It’s next weekend?”

“Yeah, we can go together if you want. I was planning on catching a ride with my brother Casey and his friends, but I don’t mind going with you,” she shrugged.

“Sounds cool; want to give me your number?” I asked, this was going to be fun. I didn’t know Kelsey that well, but this was a chance for us to get to know each other better.
