Chapter 2
Thunder and lightning could be heard and seen out the window of the funeral home the storm was on the verge of exploding at any minute. Just the type of day Callie found fitting for the funeral of her parents. She sat in the viewing room no one else had arrived yet. Looking at her parents in their caskets she just wanted peace some kind of peace. Callie thought she was alone before but now her heart was broken. She heard voices behind her some people had arrived. Then the heavens opened up and the rain came down. Callie could not think about the irony of the storm on the day that she buries her parents.
They stood in the pouring rain saying good bye to family and friends many were crying but one stood there stoic Callie had no more tears left she was just going through the motions. Callie was exhausted she unlocked the door to her condo. The message light on the answering machine was flashing she did not care. All she wanted right now was something to numb the numbness she was feeling right now. She opened the cupboard and took out a shot glass went to the liquor cabinet and took out a bottle she sat on the couch opened the bottle and poured herself a shoot. The liquid burned as it went down her throat at least she felt something. Then she poured another. She did not want to think about all she had to take care of. After four more shots she went to the answering machine and pressed the button.
“Ms. Merrick, you do not know me but I was an acquaintance of your parents.” “My name is Bennett Nye.” “I would appreciate a call back it is imperative that I speak with you here is my number.” thank you and good bye.
Callie listened to the rest of the messages nothing important she decided. She was wondering what this Bennett Nye wanted. She was just too tired to do anything she took a shower and then went to bed. She was asleep before her head hit the pillow. She woke to her doorbell ringing. Callie looked out the window first to see who it was. “It was Sam her best friend. She opened the door.
“Are you ok, I have been here at your door for ten minutes?” Sam asked.
“Do I look ok?” Callie asked.
Sam looked around and saw the bottle of liqueur and the shot glass.
“Rough night?” she asked.
“Yeah something like that.” Callie told her.
“Sam I want you to listen to this message this guy left yesterday.” Callie said
Callie played the message for her a few times.
“What do you think I do not know what to do.” “Should I call him and meet with him or should I leave it alone?” Callie asked Sam.
“I don’t know what to tell you.” “Do you think it would be worth meeting with him has anything to do with your parents?” asked Sam.
“I don’t know Sam.” she said.
“Why don’t you go take a shower and get dressed and then you can decide.” “I will put some coffee on.” Sam said.
Callie went and got into the shower. The hot water running down her body felt good. She just stood there and let it run on her. She got out and then dressed. She went out to where Sam was there also was a man there.
“Ms. Merrick I am Bennett Nye I called you yesterday.” “I know yesterday was a difficult day for you but it very important that I talk with you alone.” Bennett said.
“Mr. Nye what you have to say can be said in front of my friend Sam.” Callie said.
“No Ms. Merrick it has to be alone.” he said.
Callie looked at Sam and shrugged her shoulders.
“Callie I guess I will get going call me later.” Sam said as she went over and hugged her as she left.
“Ok Mr. Nye my friend is gone so please tell me what is so important.” Callie said.
“Ms. Merrick I met your parents many years ago and I told them the story I am going to tell you now.” “Ms. Merrick you must understand what I am about to say is not a joke it is the truth and it is your destiny.” he told her.
Callie looked at Bennett Nye strangely. Bennett went on and told her the story as he knew it. Callie could not believe what she had just heard. Bennett Nye handed Callie a key to a deposit box at a bank that is where she will find the answers.
“Mr. Nye does this have anything to do with my parents.” Callie asked.
“I do not know what is in the box all I know is that upon the deaths of your parent’s I was to give you this.” he told her.
“Thank you Mr. Nye for taking the time.” Callie said as she led him to the door.
Callie looked at the key and thought to herself.
“What answers will I find.” “I don’t even know what questions to ask.”
Callie went to the bank and asked to see the security box. The manager led her back and showed her to a table. The manger left. Callie looked at the box for a long time then she put the key in and turned it. She pulled lid opened in there she finds an envelope. She took it out and opened the envelope in she found a letter written a language she did not know. Also there was a necklace that looked very old and delicate she had never seen the likes of before. She took the stuff with her when she was leaving the bank someone was in the distance taking pictures of her.
