Kathryn's POV
There was a bright flash of light.
The next memory wasn't mine. It was the man called Phil's.

Phil's POV
I stood on the bridge of the helicarrier. I often came up here to think. Reflecting back, joining SHEILD had not been the best idea in the world. It got my brother kidnapped, leaving his two sons, Adrian and Billy, and his wife behind. He also didn't know when he left that his wife was pregnant with a girl, whom she had named Maria. In his absence, I had raised his children. Not as my own, certainly, but I was their father figure. Later their mother remarried a man named Andrew Hill. Maria changed her name, but not the boys. They still kept the last name of Coulson.
Later, obsessed with finding their father, Adrian and Billy got jobs at SHEILD. I was their supervisor. With the help of the SHEILD ground base, we set up radar that could travel faster than the speed of light and find the planet where they had taken Jeff. We were granted government financing, and we purchased dozens of satellite dishes and put them around SHEILD's ground base in the United States. That's how the Americans came to join the other realms in the Universe. It was all because of me. Turns out Odin made a rule that a realm must discover the others before it can be granted an ambassador.
"Uncle Phil, you have a job interview to perform," said Adrian, sidling up beside me. He had the same spiky blond hair and blue eyes of his father. They looked just alike.
"Yes. I remember."
"Okay," said Adrian, walking back to his place, running a computer on in the control room.
I strolled off the bridge and went directly to the main conference room. The woman outside the door was all too familiar. "Maria?" I asked.
"Hey, Uncle Phil," she smiled.
"Come on in," I said. I was not expecting this. "Sit down."
I sat across from her and waited for her to get comfortable. "Why do you want to work for SHEILD?"
"The same reason as you, Agent Coulson. To find dad." Her cerulean-blue eyes were alive with fire. "I know he's out there. Billy told me you guys are close to finding him. I want to be part of that since I never met him."
"You look just like him you know," I said. "You have his face and his eyes. And you're tough as nails like him too. I've known you for years, kiddo and you never let those big brothers of your pick on you."
"Course not," she said. "They knew better than to mess with me."
I smiled and shook my head. Adrian still had a scar on his arm where Maria bit him as a child for taking her Barbie doll. "I see here you got a job with the CIA? Your mother never told me anything about that."
"She didn't know. I wasn't allowed to tell her. I know it isn't that big a deal, but you have to start at the bottom."
The bottom? The CIA only took the best of the best. You had to be extremely combat proficient to be hired by the CIA. I looked at her combat training. Holy cow! How the hell did she become that good a shot? The only better shot I knew was Agent Barton, and he was in Russia with Ivan Drakov. She also had a black belt in Karate, and her weapon was knives. I nodded. All around, she was good to go. "Your record is impeccable. I see no problem finding a job for you at SHEILD."
"Do you want me to start off on dad's project?"
"No. I want you to talk to Fury next. He needs a commanding officer for a special project of his."
