The locker room was pumped up.As I changed, I heard as the whole locker room boomed with the sounds of chants and pounding of lockers.
With a grin on my face, I pictured the guys jumping along with the noise in the background.
I shook my head and laughed, pulling on my pants.
They're crazy.
I got out of the stall without my jersey on, tank top hugging my figure. As I stepped in front of the mirror, my mind raced.
I pictured myself charging down the field with a ball tucked safely between my arms.
I pictured the end zone coming into view, no one standing in between me and a touchdown.
I pictured the eruption of cheers followed by the illumination of the scoreboard as the cameras flashed and the announcers blared my name.
Touchdown by number 42, Natalie Evans they would bellow.
By then, my gender won't make a difference.
All that will matter is those 6 extra points I slapped onto the board.
All that will matter is the sun shining as I was hoisted onto someone's shoulder, carried off into the locker exactly like I carried the ball down the field to bring in the win.
I pictured it all as I slipped the game day uniform over my head.
It felt official, but I knew it wasn't until I walked onto the field and the whistle blew.
I pictured it all. I pictured it perfectly.
I stared into my eyes, accentuated by the two swipes of eye black I had painted on. Today was meant to be sunny, so to reduce the glare, Seth recommend I do it.
I looked appropriately accessorized but I had a feeling I was forgetting something.
Giving myself one last questioning look, I grabbed my gloves and helmet and made my way back to the locker room.
When I arrived, the guys were all chanting "We are! Re-bels! We are! Re-bels!"
I smiled and quietly slipped into a seat between a standing Seth and our center, Wes Lopez.
Seth eyed me and tugged my arm, indicating for me to stand up. Coach Durham, Carter, Wesley, and Williams walked into the locker room as hoots erupted. Alison and the managers soon followed, sneaking in unnoticed beneath the roars.
Durham remained emotionless along with Wesley and Williams as Coach Carter smiled slightly.
We relaxed after a couple moments and took our seats, the applause dying down. The game starters were situated near the front while the second stringers and Freshman players (backups for the backups) were sitting out of uniform in the back.
