We walked in and the bell rang. I looked over and saw a red headed girl with gauges and several piercings managing the cash register. Her head was in her hand as the other typed away on her phone, clearly bored. As we approached she looked up and put her phone in her pocket, reluctantly slipping her hat back over her ponytail.

I glanced at Alex and smirked. "Let's see if you remember what exactly I'd like to order."

He shot me a crooked smile. "Challenge accepted."

We stepped up and looked at the girl. She smiled slightly. "Hello, welcome to Priscilla's! How may I help you?"

Alex stepped up and smiled. "I'll get a Chocolate Cake Batter Sundae. Extra chocolate chips, no chocolate syrup." He looked at me and then back at the girl, who was typing on the register and scribbling down the order. "And for her, I'll get a scoop of Turtle Island on a warm fudge brownie. Extra pecans, drizzle the caramel, and no cherry."

Damn he knew me too well.

Knowing he got it right, he smirked at me.

"Your total will be $11.21, sir." He flipped open his wallet, taking out a 20 and handing it to her.

"Keep the rest." He said to her as she scrambled for change. He shot her a smile as she looked up.

I stuffed my hands in my pocket and smiled at Alex. He's such a good person at heart.

The girl smiled at him as she put the bills in her pocket. "Thank you, sir. Your order will be right in about 5 minutes."

He nodded and we walked over to the stools lined up across the counter. She slipped into the kitchen and out of sight.

I shook my head at Alex. "Andrea is very lucky to have you."

He laughed. "Why do you say that?"

"You're so much different than other guys. Most of the ones here aren't as sweet and understanding as you."

He smiled and ruffled my hair. "Thanks, Nat." He glanced at me and got a serious look in his eyes "But I think it's the other way around. Real talk: that girl changed me for the better."

I raised my eyebrows as I fixed my hair. "How so?"

He looked away. "I was a player in high school, remember? I broke too many hearts of unexpecting girls and now I regret it. I wasn't even serious about Andrea when I asked her to be my girlfriend-she was a dare by some of my friends back then. It was only because she was quiet and nerdy, never really talking to anyone. I was popular and this amazing basketball player-a guy who everyone said she didn't deserve. But... something-scratch that, many things- about her had me pinned down after just a few months and it took off from there. I feel guilty for ever being like that and she made me realize how valuable girls and women are."

He sighed. "She's really special to me, Natalie. She makes me so happy I don't even know how to describe it. When we broke up those three times throughout high school, I felt empty. I just love her so much and I wish I could repay her for all that she's done for me."

"Wow, that's really beautiful. You're such a philosopher, Alex." I said genuinely. I put my head against his shoulder and looked up at his sad eyes. I was itching to ask him a question but I waited a little bit. After a few moments of silence, the urge took over me.

I pulled my head away and turned on my stool to look at him. "Can I ask a question?"

He turned his head towards me and smiled a small smile. "Anything."
