It happened one snowy twilight, when the Dovers attended a Thanksgiving dinner at the home of their friends, the Birches. Keller Dover was an independent contractor who lives with his wife Grace and two kids in a suburban neighborhood. He loves hunting, and hoarding canned goods, gas masks, and survivalist gadgets in his basement. Franklin and Nancy Birch had kid the same age with the Dovers.
Afterwards, the children went for a walk in the neighborhood and approached a campervan that is parked outside a house nearby. There was a music playing, which suggests there is somebody inside. The two little girls climbed the van but yanked by their older siblings and came back to the house.
While the parents drink wine and talk in the living room, the two little girls asked if they could go to the Dovers' house to get something. It was a walk from which they did not return. Panic ensued, especially when it became clear that a creepy RV, which had been seen parked in the neighborhood earlier, had vanished. Subsequently, Detective Loki was assigned to the case.
Detective Loki interrogated Alex Jones, the driver of the strange RV who happened to have an IQ of a ten-year-old. As the search continues, Dover was informed that Jones had been released. He abducted and locked Jones up in an abandoned apartment building and began torturing him. Another suspect, Bob Taylor, is later arrested at his home, whose walls were covered in drawings of mazes. At the police station, Taylor confesses to the abduction of the girls but he shot himself before revealing any more information.
Suddenly out of nowhere Joy Birch, one of the lost girls, was found drugged but alive. Dover visited her in the hospital and had been told by Joy groggily that she saw him. He then realized that Joy may have seen him at the Jones' house when he visited Holly, Jones' guardian, and run from the police. Detective Loki found Anna, the Dovers' missing daughter, but the kidnapper, Holly, already injected a poison to Anna and exchanged gunfire with him. He then rushed Anna to the hospital where she reunited with her mother.
