Ch.1 Watching and Protecting

Guardian's P.O.V.

The city was bustling with honks and shouts from the crowd that were arriving late from work. The traffic was hopelessly jammed and people angrily shouted at the taxi drivers and climbed out of the cabs. The store owners flipped their signs from OPEN to CLOSED. The stores' managers came out with their keys in hand. The keys jingled twice before locking the doors and then the keys were stuffed in the owners' pockets. In the corners of the streets, at the bus stops, and underneath the lampposts there were men reading the local newspaper, sitting comfortably on benches. The buses picked people up by the shopping center while others simply headed to their apartments by the lake. Some civilians walked their pets through the park while the dogs barked and looked up at their owners with a spark of admiration in their eyes.

Occassionally, there would be a couple of friends who would pass by each holding a cup of coffee. Then at the bar there were bartenders passing out drinks to the customers, some were participating in poker, pool or playing archery with little darts. There were also the late night joggers making their way across the Brooklyn Bridge. Tourists from around the world were still trying to find their way back to their hotels and sauntered confusingly through Times Square. The restaurants had several people remaining who were joking around and talking with their friends and family. The university was finally closing and its students came pouring out. At Central Park some horses with carriages galloped past the by-standers, and at the Ice Skating Rink in the Rockefeller Center couples, families, and friends were skating around while holding hands and smiling at each other. People with blankets came out from alleyways and different streets and stretched out their blankets on the sidewalk to reveal purses, watches, and fancy clothes and began choosing their victims to persuade them into buying their products. The Chrysler was soaring high seeming as though nothing can destroy the building or make it topple down. Even Ground Zero was surrounded by new hope, spirit, and peace. Yes, the whole city was peaceful right now. Unbelievably but so true: New York was so tranquil at the moment, at least steadier than usual.

My white wings extended backwards, as I placed them behind me. I looked up at the dark sky, shot upwards from the Empire State Building, and spread my wings.
