Chapter 4
My lone wolf cocked and eyebrow, then slowly nodded with a wolfish grin on his face.
‘So we can talk telepathically now, right,’ I thought, hoping he would hear me. That’s the thing; once you’re in a pack with someone you can talk telepathically, mainly so the Alpha of the pack can give clear orders.
‘Yeah, we can. Hi,’ his voice was warm and friendly.
‘So who’s going to be Alpha?’
‘Obviously it’s you.’
‘What why?’
‘It’s because you’ve got Alpha blood in you.’
‘What? How do you know what’s in my blood?’
‘Putting it politely the smell of your Alpha blood has mixed with your scent. It’s also why you’re such a large and muscular wolf; most females are almost half your size!’
‘Avoiding pointing out that your comments seem to be insinuating I’m fat–‘
‘I promise I wasn’t suggesting you were fat,’ he stammered.
‘It’s okay I was only joking anyway. So if we’re a pack now, what do we do next?’
‘Territory.’
‘Territory?’
‘Yes, don’t worry we’re advanced, we don’t mark our territory like dogs,’ he winked.
‘What? Oh! Oh, I understand,’ I mentally blushed, which is a difficult feat, ‘So how do we mark territory then? I mean I read about it but I rushed the last bit because it was so late.’
‘Ah, were you worried about keeping me waiting? Sweet,’ he mentally winked along with his question, ‘Anyway, all you have to do is basically rub your side against any major landmark at the edge of your territory. You can also rub your paws against stones or objects like that; you have sweat glands under your fur and in your paws to help you rub off your scent. Oh, I almost forgot, if you’re near another pack’s territory you should be able to see a slightly red haze: like when it’s a hot day and things in the distance shimmer slightly – just like that but with a reddish hint to it.’
‘You are such a fount of indispensable knowledge,’ I replied sarcastically.
‘What!’
‘Ah I’m only kidding, you are very helpful, and it was just me getting back at you for your comment earlier.’
‘What, about you feeling worried you were late for me? You mean you weren’t?’
‘Hey! Hey! Don’t you look so hurt! Ignoring how much this is going to hurt my ego, yes. Yes I was worried I was late for you. I thought if I was too late you wouldn’t turn up when I howled.’
‘We’d better start marking the territory.’
‘What! No comment on how sweet I just was? No kind or caring comment?’
‘Oh. Sorry. That was one of those moments wasn’t it? Ah, you should probably expect that from me. Not one of the most observant people; actually no, the most observant person, but well-’
‘Whoa, okay! I didn’t ask for war and peace! It’s alright; you’re a bloke I understand!’
‘What no? You can’t go and call the guy card on me!’
‘Pfft! I so can! You went and ignored what a wonderful, amazing thing I said!’
‘Okay, now that’s just blowing it out of proportion. Who knows where you could have taken this conversation.’
‘Oh,’ I drew out the ‘o’, and added sarcastically, ‘Sorry! Girlfriend issues I assume? Ha!’
His audible growl ripped though the mental conversation, feral, aggressive and defensive.
‘Let’s go mark territory,’ I ran off to the nearest tree and rubbed my side against it then sidled over to the next one. The wolf then began to mirror my actions on the other side. I hesitated at my sixteenth landmark.
‘What?’
‘I – ah, forget it.’
‘No, please, tell me?’
‘I don’t even know who you are…’
‘Ah, okay, well, um-’
A deep savage growl ripped through the clearing. Both my lone wolf and I snapped our heads up in the direction of the intruding wolf...
