I woke to a gentle swaying motion and the sounds of splashing. My heart pounded behind my eyes, giving me a headache. Groaning I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar room, I was confused for a moment before I remembered what happened--I shot up and threw the sheets off of my body. Remembering that I am now a prisoner of pirates did nothing to relieve my pounding headache.
Trying not to focus on the panic swelling in my chest I looked around the room. It is so...clean and bare. There are no personal affects anywhere in the room, no clothes on the floor or on the single chair in the room. The desk, the chair is sitting in front, of has nothing on it. The overly clean room is giving me the creeps.
Slipping out of the bed I head for the only door I see. There was a sharp tug on my leg before I fell face first on to the cold floorboards. A loud thump sounded in the room as my body collided with the floor. Cursing I flip over to see my leg chained to the end of the bed.
"What the bloody hell? I'm already on their ship and they still feel the need to chain me to a bed." I yell anger lacing my voice.
The chain connecting me to the bed is short giving me very little space to walk around. I cannot even reach the small desk. I had nothing that could help me escape.
"Aye, that is why the room is so bare and clean." Rafe's voice sounded behind me.
Had he read my mind?
I stood and slowly turned towards him. I made sure my posture was relaxed to hide my sudden nervousness. I was again angered at my attraction to him, he is my kidnapper for the love of all that is blue! Rafe stood relaxing against the door frame, with a small smirk playing with his lips.
"We could hear your body hit the floor all the way up on deck." His low chuckle sends embarrassment coursing through my body.
My face warms telling me that it is now the same shade as my hair, a burning red. "Has my father responded yet?" I ask trying to brush away my embarrassment.
"Yes, he will meet up with the Capitan shortly."
Sadness suddenly rushes through out my body making my shoulders sag and my eyes tear up. I am all that my father has left of my mother. The woman who he loves so much, even though she is no longer with us, will always be in his heart. I know that this is going to break him, and I don't even know how to help really.
"Don't cry. I cannot stand it when a beautiful woman cries." Rafe is standing so close to me now.
Is he trying to comfort me? Wait!
"What? If the Captain is meeting up with my father for the exchange why am I not with him?" Panic and fear for my father cloud my mind. I don't even think about myself, about the fear I have for my safety and wellbeing.
I look into Rafe's eyes, but there is a shadow covering his face. "You will not be going home with your father anytime soon." His voice is monotone, no emotions whatsoever.
My heart stops, then pounds. My breath comes in short pants, I am slightly aware that I am hyperventilating.
Rafe's strong fingers grip my arms. "You have to calm down."
Is that panic I hear in his voice?
"I c-cannot." I forced my words out through the short pants of breath.
Rafe sits me on the bed and pushes my head between my legs. He softly mummers to me and rubs my back, I cannot hear what he is saying but it helps to calm me down. I do not know how long I sat there with my head between my legs before I hear a small click. "The Captain is back and requesting you to meet him up on deck." Again Rafe's voice is void of all emotions.
He is still kneeling in front of me, head slightly bent as he stares at my feet. My hand moves to run my fingers though his thick black hair. It is softer than I thought it would be, and plush. Those teal, blue eyes sparkled as they bore into my green ones. Reaching up, he pulled my hand to his lips and kissed the fingers.
"The Captain is waiting for you." His words and actions snap me out of my daze.
Taking a few deep breaths I steady myself to face the captain. " Thank you, I am alright now."
Nodding, Rafe leads me out the door and into a short hallway that leads into another room. "This is my room now." I am confused for a second. "The Captain gave his room to me so I am always near you."
So I will be staying with them for awhile. Ignoring my feelings, I follow Rafe out his door and onto the main deck of the ship.
All movement stops as Rafe calls out to the captain. "Captain White here she is."
White?
He was standing on the quarter deck talking to a dark skinned man. The captain's white hair was almost silver in the sunlight. A large smile was plastered on his face as he took in my appearance. "Ah...my little Queen how are we on this lovely morning?"
I eyed his crew, they did not look to be pirates. "I am as well as I can be considering the situation. Your crew...are they disguised as fishermen, captain?" I question, looking up at the captain.
"I suppose that is true." His eyes scanned his crew. "My crew...they are disguised, but this is what they would normally wear. You see we are not a normal pirate crew. All of my crew members are educated, it makes dealing with other pirates and men who are highly educated easier."
I can see his point. When I was still being taught by my tutors it was easy for my father to trick me into doing things that I didn't want to do and he couldn't bribe me because he knew things I didn't, but as I got older and finished my teachings he couldn't trick me anymore. "I see why you want to have an educated crew."
"Yes." His smile dimmed some. "Your father is a very smart man, he paid the ransom and then some to get you back, but I didn't want to give you up once I found something in your trunk." He held up a sword.
My eyes widened, "What are you doing with my Rapier? I thought that father put it up." I know that my father put it up. He took it from me when he found Hobbens and I fencing. Hobbens is our butler and I asked him to teach me how to use a sword, he once was in the Navy, my father always said that men in the Navy can make the best butlers.
"Like I said, I found it in your trunk. When I found your Rapier it intrigued me. Why would a high class young woman have something like this? Was it a gift from an admirer? No, they would give chocolates or poems. I know your father wouldn't give you something like this. So my little Queen I do believe that you wanted this and I want to know if you know how to use it."
Captain White tossed my Rapier to me. "Who will my opponent be?"
His eyes scanned his crew before landing on Rafe. "Your King, he is my best swords men."
"Do I get to change out of my nightgown?"
He smiled down at me. "No, when on a pirate ship you never know when a fight will break out."
"What do I get if I win?"
He though about it for a second. "If you win I will give you freedom, but my little Queen if you lose you will stay with me."
I could taste the freedom on my tongue, and I was so distracted with is that I did not get a promise out of him.
