Ruby's POV
It's already 9pm and I just can't sleep, I'm too hot even with the window open. It feels like there's a fire inside me, burning me to ashes. I get up out of bed and creep downstairs out into the garden. I stand on the grass next to our pear tree in the moonlight. I pick one of the pears and (try to) take a bite.
Clink "OUCH!" I shout. I look at the pear. Hang on! I think, This isn't fruit! It's a gem, a red, flame-shaped gem! I hold it in my hand and tip-toe indoors. I leave the gem on the kitchen table and go upto my room.
I fell asleep quite easily after that.
