I wake up Sunday morning and check my phone. I still haven't gotten a text from Camila. She must still be asleep.
I go into the kitchen and see my mom. "Good morning mami." I smile and kiss her cheek.
"Good morning babygirl. Where's Camila?" she asks and looks behind me.
"Oh she went home last night." I answer.
"She's been here a lot lately. Is there anything I should know about?" my mom turns to face me.
"Oh.. maybe that's a conversation for another time." I try to avoid the topic. It's not that I want to keep it a secret, I guess I'm just so used to hiding it.
"Or it can be a conversation for right now. How about I'll make you some pancakes and we can talk about it?" my mom asks and I nod.
"Actually pancakes are a little overrated. Can I make you something? It's really weird but I promise it tastes very good." I smile.
"Okay princess. I can't wait to try it." my mom smiles and sits down at the table.
I take out eggs, cheese, sausage, bacon and tater tots. I sit them all on the counter and begin cooking.
"Sweetie are you trying to kill me so that you don't have to talk about Camila?" my mom jokes and I laugh.
"No mami. Camila is actually the one who showed this to me. I thought it was weird too but it comes out delicious." I smile thinking about Camila.
I finish the food and put it all on a wrap. I hope I did it justice.
I hand my mom a plate and sit across from her. I bite my lip anxiously as she takes a bite.
"This actually isn't so bad." my mom admits and I give myself an imaginary pat on the back.
"So, Camila." the older woman looks at me and I take a small bite of my food.
"She has a tough life at home. She said she feels safer being here than at home." I tell my mom.
"Sweetie I know that part. Camila talked to me about that already. I mean is there anything going on between the two of you? She wouldn't answer me when I asked her." my mom said and I try to think about when Camila and my mom actually had a private conversation.
"Oh.. yes. I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I just didn't know how you would respond. It just sort of happened." I admit and look down. I hope I didn't lose her trust.
"I would be scared to admit something like that too. Some people can be really harsh about things like that. However, I am your mother and I love you. And I love Camila. And I love you and Camila together. She is a really beautiful and strong woman and I am really proud of you for telling me."
"That's the first time you've said you were proud of me in a long time." I admit. The feeling of knowing that I did something to make my mom proud means the world to me. Just hearing the words "I'm proud of you" is something I have been trying to achieve for such a long time.
"Lauren sweetie, I am so sorry if I ever made you feel like I'm not proud of you. I really am so proud of everything you do. All your grades, your cheerleading, I am proud of it all. I love you mija." my mom kisses my head and I can't contain the smile on my face.
"Thank you mami. I love you too." I hug her just as Normani comes through the door. She has a key to the house for emergencies but she uses it all the time.
"Awe I really don't want to interrupt this adorable moment should I come back?" she asks and the look on her face I can tell she doesn't want to.
"Don't worry Normani darling. It is okay. I have to go check on Mr. Jauregui at his job anyway. He forgot his lunch again. He's already getting senile." my mom smiles and gives Normani a hug before grabbing my dads lunch bag and leaving.
