 Riley's POV:

The usual 2 minute trek to the cafeteria seemed like it had turned into an hour's worth of walking. Not the I'm not tired, I'm fabulous walking, but the awkwardly quiet walk, where no one talks and you just stare at anything that doesn't have two eyes. Mason seemed to have lost his voice and as for me I could barely speak since I saw him that morning. It was pathetic to put it simply.

To make matters even worse, the line was longer than my Biology teachers rants, which were aggravatingly lengthy. By this point in time we had been silent for almost 20 minutes and deciding to not be ridiculous slab of cellulose I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind "So what do you think of blue cheese?" No one will ever understand how much i wanted to stab myself right there and then. I feel like the only reason Mason didn't just disappear from my sight is because he actually had a lot to say about Blue Cheese. That or he felt as awkward and weird as I did. His melodious voice replied in a somewhat surprised manner "Uh.. well I've never had it, so I can't really say?" To be fair if anyone asked me about Blue Cheese I'd be fairly surprised as well.

After what seemed like an eternity Mason and I had finally sat down with trays full to the brim with all the food we could get our hands on. Well, actually what the lunch lady's gave us because we're not allowed to touch the food, something about a guy who didn't wash his hands after the bathroom. Since the food line was like a war zone, we took enough food to sustain the both of us until we couldn't possibly eat any more.

Throughout the queue, Mason and I had had a surprisingly decent conversation. There was no more talk of dairy products or the weather. We were both speculating the possible locations both our friends could be hiding out at. "Okay so they could either be at the cinema, bowling, the park or at each other's house." I concluded.

"But the cinema is closed after the whole leaking pipes incident, so that is one down.""Where do you think they could have gone Mason?"."Okay so Connor has been my best friend since we were 8 and one thing that I've learned is that Connor is THE most suckiest bowler on the planet. He managed to fracture my foot and almost sprain his own." Mason said. While I chuckled at the thought of Connor's bowling, Mason continued "They could either be at the park or at each other's house." I stabbed my bowl of fruit, which I had been forced to take because apparently we had to eat healthier. Which is totally garbage because this lumpy and dried fruit is giving me close to no nutrition whatsoever.

"So I think the new Maze Runner movie is coming out?" Mason stated. "The Scorch Trials? Yeah Riley and I have been SUPER excited to see it." I exclaimed in a daze thinking about Thomas Brodie Sangster's beautiful face." Do you want to go see it with me ?" He hesitantly spoke. If I was in front of anybody else I would have probably ended up spitting my mushy fruit all over their face, but because that someone was Mason I had to swallow instead of spew it out. I could feel his eyes analyzing my expression for what I was going to say next. My heart thumped so loud I could hear it in my ears. "Riley?". I realized I had been staring at my tray in silence for over a minute, so I quickly glanced up at his warm eyes and replied "I... I would love to."

All of a sudden a smile had it up his already brightened expression and before I could stop it, a similar grin had been painted onto my face. It was like my body reacted to him automatically. If Bailey were here she would have been clapping like a maniac and then asked him if he was asking me out. But alas, I was not my gutsy and courageous best friend and if I wanted to know something,, I had to ask him myself. So before I could talk myself out of it I blurted out "Is it going to be a date?"

And the silence that followed made me want to hit myself in the eye with my own plastic knife. He might have stayed silent for a year, but I was too busy wallowing in a pool of embarrassment and shock to notice. Now would be a good time for the world to end or an army of zombies to rush through the doors and eat my brain out. Anything would be better than just sitting here in silence after possibly ruining the most perfect moment of my life.

"What would you say if this were a date?" His voice had interrupted my plans on how to kill myself with nothing, but a plastic spoon. "What?" I so smartly replied. You would think that after blurting out at least a dozen stupid stuff, my mouth would give it a rest, but no. "What would you say to me if I asked you out?" Mason repeated with a nervous, yet positively stunning smile on his face. This was it. I had one chance to make things go perfect and I could not mess it up with my stupidity. "I would say that I'd love too." And then I shyly looked into his eyes, searching for any sort of surprise.

"I guess it's good that I asked you out then isn't it?" He slyly added , standing up as the shrill bell echoed around us. Breaking through the bubble of privacy we had built and allowing hundreds of voices to spill through and into our ears. Mason flashed me a quick smile and a I'll see you later, before turning around and walking to his next class.

And as for me I sat at the table in what most would describe as in a daze. Because that could not have seriously just happened? But after pinching myself multiple times and not waking up, I had decided that this was as real as my hair. My hair is the most genuine thing ever for those of you  who're wondering.

Mr. Face walked up to me and tapped my shoulder. "Ms. Howell I suggest you start moving to your next class, seeing as you are almost 10 minutes late." I quickly shot up and raced out of the cafeteria, already planning what I was going to tell Bailey.
