Riley's POV:

I leaned my drowsy head onto my arm as I glared at the girl in front of me. This was becoming a regular occurrence. The drowsiness, not the glaring at random girls. My economics teacher seemed to be droning on about economies of scale and Connor was too shocked to speak. His silence might have something to do with the fact that his best friends ex-girlfriend had casually sauntered through the classroom door at 7:00 this morning or maybe he had recently finished Pretty Little Liars. Either way, I couldn't bring myself to be concerned about his feelings when mine were in a rocking ship of turmoil. "Ms. Howell are you okay?" My economics teacher worriedly questioned. As the entire class's eyes shifted towards my bulging eyes and surprised expression, I spluttered "Y..yup, I'm f..fine Mrs. Johnson". Unconvinced, she nodded her head and decided that whatever existential crisis I was obviously going through (she had seen me burning craters into the back of Mallory's perfect, blonde little head) was less important than learning why businesses made more money depending on their output. Honesty, even if we didn't have a teacher I am 100% sure that we would do just fine. All she does is quote the textbook word for word.

A vibration from my pocket disrupted my plans to bury my teacher. I checked my phone and found a message from Bailey. "What is Satan's spawn doing?" I stifled a giggle before replying "Nothing much. She's pretending that she knows economics and every two minutes she feels the need to remind the entire class that she did the entire course for this year already and yet whenever the teacher asks her anything, she knows basically nothing." I quickly pressed send before Ms. Johnson found another reason to add to her list of reasons to hate me. After Mallory decided that it was perfectly normal to talk crap about my family and I in my house and in my room, I had to tell someone my parents would feel really hurt. They were two of the nicest people ever and felt responsible for anything bad that came out of their guests mouths no matter how horrible that person is. So I decided that the only person I could tell the truth to was Bailey. I had hoped she would be angry when she heard, as angry as I was. And boy was she angry.

I sat on my wooden desk and stared at the whiteboard that was covered in writing, not absorbing anything. The only thing I could focus on was Mallory. Her and Mason had been together for two years, how was I going to compete with that? The truth is that I can't, but Mason is basically the only guy that I've liked since freshman year. The fear and anxiety strangled my heart, making my breathing quicken. Why was this affecting me like this? Mason and I had only been on speaking terms for the past three weeks or so.

It seemed like seconds later that Connor pulled me up from my desk and dragging me to God knows where. My bag bounced on my lower back which I hadn't even bothered to open even a single time since I had gotten to school at 6:45 this morning. My morning had started off so good. I had woken up on time, granted that I had had only two and a half hours of sleep, but I was on time nonetheless. Even Mason and Connor hung out with us near our lockers. My heart fluttered at the thought of Mason, I could still remember his blinding and breath taking smile that still took my breath away. He had been extremely cheerful in the morning. A sudden realization punched my gut. What if he was happy to see her? What if Mason was glad that Mallory had come back because now he could get back with her? This epiphany made my lungs close up a little bit. The air rushed past my face as I came back to reality.

Connor still had an Iron tight grip on my arm and he was speedily leading me somewhere. Maybe it was the fact that I had had close to no sleep or the first thing I had seen today was Mallory's hateful face, but all of a sudden I really couldn't care less to where he was leading me to. So I kept mum and before long we had come to a halt in front of an empty classroom. Connor looked to the left and then to the right before he opened the door and yanked me in. To say that I was confused would be an understatement, here we were in an abandoned classroom facing each other missing math and he hadn't uttered a single syllable since we had stepped into the room. "Connor what are we even doing here? "I asked worried that something bad had happened. His head snapped up, scanning my face for something. Whatever he seemed to be searching for it looked like he had found it because he inhaled deeply before replying "So in freshman year Mason dated a girl and it lasted a really long time an.." "I know." I said, cutting him off. "I remember seeing them around school, they went everywhere together. Plus, I sort of saw on his Facebook." I explained sheepishly.

"Listen when Mallory left she was a completely different person than when we met her. As a freshman she was kind, a little blunt, but nice all the same. But by the time she left a year ago, Mallory seemed to think that she was the best thing to have happened to the earth since sliced bread. Which is why Mason broke it off with her, it killed him inside, but he knew he had to do it since he wasn't happy anymore. Mallory couldn't handle the embarrassment so she told everyone that she was the one who had broken it off, but now that she's back she will try to get with him, but we can't let her do that. I can't see Mason go through that heartbreak again. Mallory likes to use people and we have to make sure that she can't use any of us especially Mason." Connor passionately explained with a fiery conviction and love for his best friend painted in his eyes. "So will you help me?" He asked hopefully.

"Connor, you know that I care about Mason, but are you sure that he needs to be kept at a distance from Mallory?" Connors dumbstruck expression met my eyes. Hurriedly, I continued to justify my statement "Don't get me wrong, I hate her more than you know, no one gets away with calling my parents weird, but Mason did seem really happy in the morning, more than usual." I pointed out. "Riles I know that you think Mason wants to get back together with Mallory, but he really doesn't. He called me as soon as he found out that she was moving back and vented his anxiety for almost two hours. He was happy in the morning because his parents got him the new ps4 and Mason was saving up for this since last year. Don't worry, Mason has absolutely no interest in Mallory anymore because he likes you." I sat on top of the teacher's desk and stared at Connor who was leaning against the door. Why couldn't I automatically say yes, I mean it's not like there's a dearth of reasons to hate Mallory and make life difficult for her, but I had to think about this. If for whatever reason Mason still has in interest in her, it wouldn't be right for me to interfere even if it came at the cost of my own heart.

Connor seemed so confident that Mason hated Mallory's guts, so there really is nothing holding me back from doing this. Slowly, my intentions began to clear up like the clouds on a summer day and I knew that if Mason like her, he would say something to us. But for now, with the benefit of the doubt I was ready to keep that serpent away from both my friends and Mason. I heaved a sigh of relief and with a clear conscience I announced that I would do it. A huge grin lit up Connor's face and he soon informed me that Bailey was also a part of this plan. "Since we still have time to kill before break, let's go to the cafeteria and eat something." Connor seemed to like that idea and before I could blink I was once again being dragged through the hallways.

We were practically sprinting to the cafeteria, seems like Connor worked up a serious appetite. Connor slowed and held onto the doors to food heaven, waiting for me to catch up. I could practically see the food behind those doors, so I wasn't really paying attention to my surroundings. I slammed into someone so hard that we both staggered backwards. Groans escaped her mouth as she rubbed her stomach. She lifted her head and I internally rolled my eyes. There the devils spawn stood, Mallory. Out of all the people in this school, how is it that I managed to only slam into her? Oh wait, everyone is still in class, but then why isn't she? "Bailey I know how difficult it is to walk with those troll feet of yours, but at least you could attempt to look straight!" Mallory screeched loudly, breaking my ear drums. I was just about to reply and give her a piece of my mind when out of the corner of my eye, I saw Connor frantically jerking his head in Mallory's direction. Confused, I closely glanced at her face and realized something. Her lips were so swollen that it seemed like she had been stung by a wasp, but that was not the case. I quickly apologised before continuing y analysis of her condition. Even her neon, ugly lipstick was smudged and her clothes were a crinkled mess. I gasped loudly as she walked away, Mallory Evans had been sucking on someone's face.

I turned to Connor and his wide eyed expression confirmed my suspicions. "Did you see that she came out of the bathroom and not even a minute later Jayden walked out?" Connor exclaimed. I nodded and then stopped "Who's Jayden?" Connor went on to explain how Jayden was one of their really close friends, who they regularly hung out with at lunch." If he's so close to you guys, why would he do that with Mallory?" I questioned, tracing the lines on the lunch tables. "I don't know, but let's not tell Mason about any of this, it'll only put a damper on his mood." I quickly agreed with Connor, before chugging down my box of chocolate milk. If Jayden was as close to both the guys as Connor said, then why would he go ahead and make out with the girl that had broken Mason's heart? It didn't make sense; we need to find out more. But if there's one thing that today has proved, it's that Mallory is not only a conniving snake, but she's also as blind as a bat because my feet are perfectly normal thank you very much.
