Chapter 12
Riley's POV:
I tiredly waited for the bell to signal that the most exhausting day in my school life was over. Even Bailey had been smart enough to not take economics and the only person I was left with to entertain me in the class full of idiots I liked to call my peers, was Connor. I'll admit he isn't my first choice for entertainment but ever since the economics classes were rearranged, he was the only person in my class who wasn't fascinated by Ryan Goslings abs and Scarlett Johansson's perfect face. I mean Ryan Gosling did have killer muscles and Scarlet Johansson was my woman crush, but there's only so much you can talk about in such a limited topic.
"Do you think Katie Lechowsky has had surgery done on her face. I mean those lips of hers are way too big to be normal. In all honestly they sort of scare me, it looks like she could suck the soul out of anyone?" Connor pondered seriously. After hearing complete silence from my direction, he turned towards me, saw my closed eyes and asked louder. "DOESN'T KATIE LECHOSKY LOOK LIKE A SOUL SUCKING DEMENTOR?!" And that is how my forehead fist bumped the table, snapping me out of my dozing state. Clearly, seeing me in pain made him feel guilty and so he apologised before questioning my sleep schedule. Yawning, I replied "I couldn't sleep all night, until like 5AM and even then I kept on waking up every 20 minutes or so." "Seriously?!" To which my head sleepily nodded. And before he could question me any further, the piercing ring of the bell echoed through my skull.
Not even a second after I had slammed the door to my house shut, I could already feel my eyes fluttering shut and I must have looked dead on my feet because even my mother; who usually had so much to tell me, stayed silent; and let me drowsily find my room. It was like a game of Pac-Man, but instead I was blindfolded and was constantly ramming into walls, to which my mother would call out my name in a concerned tone. Not having enough energy to move much longer, I flopped down on to my bed, tugged my cloud-like blanket over me and succumbed to the darkness. What seemed like a few seconds later (but what was actually two hours), I could hear a feminine voice screeching out my name. "RILEY GET READY, YOUR DADS GUESTS WILL BE HERE SOON!" I mumbled something incoherent in reply, hoping to stop my mom from screaming and I quickly returned to the land of dreams.
The next time my mom was shouting, it was right next to my head and it was another hour later. "BAILEY YOU HAVE TWENTY MINUTES BEFORE THEY GET HERE! GET UP!" My mom wailed into my throbbing ear drums. Startled, I glanced to my right to find her brown eyes wide open with panic. "What time is it?" I mumbled, before turning over and snuggling deeper into my cave of warmth. My mom began to heave my blanket off of my body "IT'S 7:40, GET UP!" Now here's the thing, under normal circumstances if anyone tried to take my duvet, I would have fought tooth and nail with them, but this was not any normal situation. No, this was a twenty minutes before guests arrive I'm not ready sort of situation and without a second thought I leaped off my bed and bounded towards the bathroom, as if someone had stuck springs to the balls of my feet.
My eyes painfully stung as I accidentally rubbed lemon flavoured shampoo in them, I rubbed them and rinsed them out with water. "Okay." I mumbled. "Now all I have to do is blow dry, straighten my hair, find clothes and put them on." Through force of habit, I began to list out all the things I still needed to do. And this was only something I tended to do under pressure. And with only fifteen minutes left, I was almost certain that I would not be ready and have the guests run away after witnessing the embodiment of Godzilla, A.K.A me. I rushed out of the bathroom, a towel securely wrapped around my chest and my now dry hair flying behind me like the tails of a coat. I was so focused on making sure my towel didn't fall off, that by the time I noticed my dad walk in front of me it was too late and I had rammed into him. With a grunt of pain from my dad and a quick apology, I sprinted into my room and pushed the door close.
