Riley's POV:
It's been a week since Conor, Bailey and I decided to keep Mallory and Mason on opposite ends of the planet. I'm starting to think that she spends all her time trying to figure out where we'll be next because somehow whenever we move away from her she magically shows up in that exact place not even ten minutes later. And I'm not being paranoid. Not even an hour ago, we were all innocently sitting at a table with Mason's group of friends and the next thing you know both Connor and Bailey were painfully stepping on my foot. I looked up at their faces to see them frantically motioning towards the cafeteria doors, so obviously I turned and saw none other than Mallory Evans strutting towards our table. I quickly stuffed my bag with everything lying around on the table and when I looked up I could see that Connor was imitating my actions, Bailey was already standing up, Mason's friends Jessica was laughing about something Jayden had said and Mason was looking at the three of us weirdly.
Mallory was halfway to our table and I needed to think fast if we wanted to get out of here. "Hey guys, sorry I just remembered that Mr. Hawkins wanted to meet the four of us right now for our projects. So we have to leave right now!"" I exclaimed loudly whilst tugging on Mason's arm. They all wave us off with a smile and before they could say anything else we had already stumbled away. By the time we had reached the door, Connor and Bailey had already pushed Mason out and so I quickly glanced around the room looking for Mallory. Unsurprisingly, she was standing next to Jayden at the table we had escaped not even moments ago. They seemed to be explaining where we had run off to and started motioning to the door. I knew they had probably told her who we were "supposedly" going to, so before she saw me I scurried away from the door and lead my friends in the exact opposite direction of Mr. Hawkins' office.
We had been power walking for almost two minutes, when Mason started to get suspicious. "Guys, Mr. Hawkins' lab is the other way. Where are we even going?" He said desperately. I nervously gulped. He couldn't find out what we had been doing all week, he'd feel insulted that we had took matters into our own hands without even talking to him about it. So I racked my brain to come up with an excuse and my eyes landed on Bailey. "Oh... um... well Bailey is...claustrophobic. Yeah and she didn't want anybody to find out so I lied in the cafeteria." I clarified, shooting a pleading look in Bailey's direction. Understanding crossed his face and soon after so did confusion. "Wait, but the cafeteria is so big, how was she feeling claustrophobic in a place that wasn't even small?" Mason asked. Yup, we're screwed and now I was getting annoyed. Like please how hard is it to accept what we've said. Before, I could bite someone's head off, Connor replied seeming even more irritated than I was "Mason, I love you man, but seriously shut up. Your kind of being really insensitive to Bailey right now!" And with that he put an arm around Bailey's shoulders left me to deal with Mason.
Silently, we walked together down the pristine hallways of our school. A few minutes passed and Mason said something that made my heart pound against my chest. "So I realized that we never hung out again after we went laser tagging. And I was wondering if you wanted to hang out at my house today." For a few seconds my brain seemed to process what he had been asking and without even a moments of hesitation, I replied with a yes. We both smiled at each other and subconsciously we had come to a halt. Alas, all good things must come to an end. Because soon enough a nasally, high pitched squeak echoed around all four of us, strangling us with its loud pitch. "Mason, there you are. I've been looking for you everywhere!" Shrieked the demon that had been haunting my friends and I for the past seven days. She came and grabbed Mason's arm before pulling him away, we all knew that this time we couldn't drag him away. He would only get even more suspicious, so we let him go. Right before he turned the corner, he said, as clear as day "I'll meet you by my car." And with that Mallory's fake grin flopped 180 degrees, making her even more determined to drag him away. And as for me, well let's just say my smile was bright enough to light up a city.
