"I know you're new here, but you need to stop staring at Friar over there." Maya looks over at the dark corner of the cafeteria where Lucas and his friends sat and laughed at everyone else.
"What are you talking about?" I looked away shyly, blushed, and went back to separating the chicken pieces with my fork.
"Oh come on, hun. That might work on our dear friend, Farkle, but it won't work on me. It's only been a month since you got here and this crush is already excessive. You know his reputation."
"Maya, Lucas isn't as bad as his friends." I reasoned.
"You obviously haven't heard everything.." She muttered.
"Maya, those are just rumours."
"Riley, you've been here a month. Don't fall for him okay. It won't do you any good."
"Have you seen him?" I say out loud and Maya gave me a warning look.
"I'm sorry, Maya. I think I already have." My thoughts say.

I saw the new, pretty brunette I've been seeing around for the past month walking around school, waiting for someone. Her eyes always seemed to meet mine and they had this innocence that I feel like I want to have. I chose to talk to her. What's the harm, right?
"Hey, new girl!" I went up to her and she was so surprised, she tripped. I ran to catch her before she fell head first on to the asphalt.
"You're a little clumsy, aren't ya?"
She moved away from my arms and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and laughed nervously. She knew about me. Of course she did. Everyone does.
"Does a pretty girl like you have a name?"
"Riley Matthews." She smiled and extended her hand.
"Nice to meet you, Riley. My name's Lucas Friar." I took her hand but pulled it closer and brought the back of it to my lips.
"You're quite the charmer, aren't you?" She blushed as she took her hand back.
"Only with interesting people."
"I interest you?"
"Maybe a little."
"You're interesting too, Mr. Friar."
"I see you've heard about me." I said sadly.
"I've heard a lot of things about you, Lucas. I just don't know if I believe everything or not."
"Well, they're all true."
"Everything? Really? I don't believe you."
"You're not much of a believer in the truth, Matthews?"
"No, but I believe that you can be a better person. And that your past does not define you."
"Why?"
"Why not?" I chuckle at her newfound confidence. She's the kind who has faith in people. Wrong move, Lucas. Another person to disappoint.
"Riley, you can't fix me." It was her turn to chuckle and I gave her a questioning look.
"You're not broken, you're just lost." I felt offended. This girl can't figure me out so quickly.
"Look, you don't know me."
"Neither do you, apparently."
"Can you stop?"
She laughs and walks away. I follow because no one walks away from Lucas Friar.
"Where do you think you're going?" I try to say intimidatingly.
"You think you scare me, don't you?" Her eyes drifted from my eyes to the hand that held her arm. I let go in fear of hurting her, which I didn't do for just anyone.
She smiled slightly as if she's saying, "thank you."
"I scare everyone."
"Not quite," she turns to walk away again, "I'll see you tomorrow, Lucas." She smiles at me before getting into the car and driving away.
I'm screwed.
