"Are you ready, Riles?" I said while our hands our held and we walk to my car.
I asked her to have our second REAL date and she looked absolutely stunning.
There was no pressure or awkwardness in this date because we know exactly what we're doing now.
"Yeah." She smiled and squeezed my hand, then brushed her hair behind her ear.
It was a Riley thing. A way that she reassures you that she's perfectly okay. A smile, a touch, and a brush of her hair behind her ear. I've known her for more than 3 years now and I've memorized almost everything about her. Like the way her eyes widen when she's surprised. Or how her tears fall slowly when she's sad: left eye, then right eye. Her mannerisms are so etched in my brain that I''ve become programmed to know exactly what she's thinking. Except now. I want to know what she's thinking now, as I open the door for her and she smiles shyly at me.
I guide her in my car with my hand on the small of her back and rush to my side of the car.
She grins at me when I sit on the driver's seat and I ask her what I wonder, "What are you thinking?" My hand easily finds her's after I start the car.
"I was thinking... that this is our first date alone and I'm kind of nervous." The constant licking of her lips told me that she was really nervous.
"There's nothing to be nervous about, I made sure everything was taken care of."
"I know that, Lucas. I wasn't nervous about that. It's just that...we rarely hang out without Maya, Farkle and Zay...I mean, we obviously still hang out alone but it's like a short time and I don't know..." Rambling. She does this when she's losing confidence.
"Riley..." I rubbed her hand with my thumb.
"I just... I don't think you'll still like me after spending time alone with me."
"Riley, that's outrageous. You're one of my favourite people to talk to, remember?"
"I know, and you're mine too. I'm just scared." She takes her hand away from mine and brushes her hair back: fear.
I reach for her hand again and take it to my lips, with my eyes still on the road. I place our hands back to the lever and keep driving to the restaurant.
I see her smile at the corner of my eye and I smile too because I know I've changed her mind.

We got in the restaurant and Lucas was, of course, a perfect gentleman: he opened the door for me, pulled my chair for me to sit, poured me glasses of the fake champagne we were given. All I could do was smile at him.
Lucas is the kind of person who, even though he can be the toughest person on the planet, will still try to treat you right. I felt very lucky to have his attention.
"Hi, I'm Missy. And I'll be your server today."
Lucas and I look at her at the same time and she looked shock too.
"Oh, hey Lucas, Riley."
"Hey." We both said.
"Nice to see you both." She says bitterly, "so what do you guys want?"
We told her our orders and she left.
"I didn't know she worked here."
"Me neither." Lucas shrugs.
While we waited for our food, we talked about Lucas' basketball game the night before.
"You played really well, I was proud."
"Thanks," he laughs, " the only reason I scored that last shot was because I looked and I saw you cheering at the side."
I rolled my eyes at how cheesy he was being.
Missy came with our food, surprisingly quick.
"Here you go guys." She places Lucas' pasta on his side and comes over to place mine down but juts over and drops it all over my lap.
"Oh my god." It felt like it was fresh off the pan.
"Oops." Missy said and walked away.
"Riley, shit. Are you okay?"
I stood up and wiped the pasta off my dress and went to the washroom.

I took Riley's things and followed behind her to the washroom.
"Hey, are you okay?"
"Just give me a second, okay?" She said, and I heard her sniffles.
"Don't come out until you hear my voice again, okay? I'll be right back." I rushed out of the restaurant and saw the small boutique across the street. There was a dress on the rack that Riley pointed out when we drove by it. I took her size, payed for it and went back to the restaurant.
I knocked on the bathroom door, "Riles?"
"Yeah?"
I slightly opened the door and stuck the dress inside.
"Lucas, oh my god."
"You can change into that, okay? Hopefully, it's your size."
I waited outside the door for her to change.
I was slightly mad that Missy would do that to her. A waited came to me and asked if everything was okay.
"No, our date was ruined. And our server was terrible. You'll be paying for my girlfriend's drycleaning, and we'll be leaving shortly." I said bluntly and he was nodding.
Riley came out in the dress and she looked really good.
"Thank you so much. You didn't have to buy me a dress."
I took my coat off and put it on her shoulders. I got her dirty dress from her and gave it to the waiter who stood there.
"Be careful with that. Please give the bill to Missy."
"Let's go, Riles."
"I'm sorry, Lucas."
"Hey, don't worry, it's not your fault, okay?" I fixed her hair and wiped her tears.
"You're really amazing, you know that?" She leaned on me while we were on the side of my car.
"No, I'm pretty sure that's you," I kissed her forehead, "let's go to In-n-Out?" I suggested and she smiled.
