As Pearl slowly began to regain consciousness, her head was pounding and she could feel that she was lying on a cold, metallic floor. Her whole body ached, her limbs quivering feverishly as she attempted to pick herself up. Pearl strained her already aching head as she tried to remember what had happened...when she was at the warp pad. There was a strange noise coming from the distance...a sharp pain running through her gem and Steven breaking his- that was when Pearl remembered Steven's terrified face as she began to fade away. Pearl snapped back to her senses in a cold sweat. She leapt to her feet in an instant and began to frantically look around for something, anything, that was familiar. Something that would tell her that her friends were okay. Instead she saw what appeared to be a human male, with an old face and a dark suit, standing before her.
Pearl didn't waste anytime (she couldn't afford to) in pulling out her spear and pointing it defensively at her mysterious captor.
"Who are you and what have you done!?", she demanded. "Answer me, you...you..."
The old stranger's face flashed with brief shock as he put his hand's up defensively. But the shock quickly disappeared, replaced with a face that seemed annoyed but mildly amused.
"Calm down", he began. "I'm sure that this has been a real shock to your system, but we can get this over with if you just-"
With a simple twist, Pearl turned the man around and pinned him up against what appeared to be a giant cylinder. She held the spear across up against his chest, with the tip pointed directly at his throat."Don't speak another word, you creep!" Pearl said to him sternly. "Now, I am bound by my duty not to harm a human so I'll make this brief; you will tell me how you've gained access to our warp stream and state your business with bringing me here."
The man just rolled his eyes and muttered something under his breath, which sounded kind of like "always so difficult."
"Excuse me, but I think I'm being very reasonable here," Pearl said back. "All I ask is a simple answer, and I promise that I won't harm a hair on your head."
"Okay, but first I have a question for you," the man responded.
"What? N-no! ", Pearl stammered, trying to get a grip on this unexpected response. You're going to give me a straight answer now! I mean, it's clearly impossible for a human to have access to-"
"First of all, stop it with that "not harming humans" business!", the stranger broke in, with his voice now sounding rather aggressive. "It already sounds ridiculously unconvincing without that weapon pointed at my head." This left Pearl taken aback slightly. "Which brings me to my next question," the man continued. "Could you please put down that spear?" Pearl hesitated for a moment before reluctantly stepping back and letting the spear dissolve in her hands.
It was then that Pearl was able to get her first real good look at her surroundings. The "cylinder" she had pinned her captor against was at the center of a massive rounded control panel. All around the panel was a massive, dimly lit room with high walls, covered in "round things".
"Interesting," Pearl wondered out loud. "Definitely not like any Gem tech I've seen... a little dirtier actually."
"You know, I'm standing right here."Pearl snapped back to reality and turned to apologize, only to find that the man was now wearing what looked like sunglasses. But, just as Pearl opened her mouth to point out this little difference, the man removed his sunglasses, exposing eyes that were wide with curiosity, despite his straight frown. "And might I say what an interesting find you are. I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with one of you." To Pearl, this was the first useful thing that this stranger had said. "So you do know something about our activities," she questioned him in a clear voice.
"I never said that," the man snapped defensively. "I was just expressing my thoughts, like you with my ship."Pearl had found herself in one of her least favorite places to be: confused. She was tired of this creep treating her like some rude house guest (not that he was exactly making this easy.) Pearl just groaned in frustration. "Okay, this is clearly getting me no where with you, so let's...start over."
"Good idea," the stranger agreed. "Well, to answer your first question, 'who am I', I'm the Doctor."
"Doctor who, exactly?", Pearl asked sincerely.
"Just Doctor", the man said, "and on that note I'm certainly not human. Now it's my turn to ask you a question...makes things easy."
"Okay," Pearl agreed.
"What's your name?"
"Pearl?"
