Chapter One

Today is the day most have been dreading all summer. Not me. I love my school, we have a lot of freedom and the teachers are awesome and really flexible. Although, I don't have many good friends at school, it's one of my favourite places to be. Luckily I have my new friend Nick. I love people watching and being around them.

Eventually I want to go to school to become a teacher. First, I have to get through senior year. Being a senior has it's advantages, but it's downfalls as well. Lots of the teachers are lax about handing things in on time.

Today's the last day of summer break and my mom and I are barbecuing some chicken for dinner in our tiny backyard in the suburbs of Charleston, South Carolina.

"What are you going to wear tomorrow, Demi?" my mom asked as she was setting the table on our patio.

"Most likely my cute green dress from target, which you'll need to iron for me" I replied with a sheepish smirk turning slightly towards her.

"Fine, throw it on my bed. I'll do it tonight"

"Thanks Mom!" I say as I flip the chicken.

As we eat, I think about how great my mom really is. She raised me by herself since I was 5. My dad left us and moved to Washington state to be with the woman he had been talking to online. Haven't heard much from him other than to occasional card and cheque.

After dinner, I clean the table and decide to give Nick a call. He is starting at my school tomorrow.

" Hey Nick!" I say enthusiastically.

"Hi Dems" he sounds a bit more mellow than usual.

"What's up?"

"Just a little nervous for tomorrow, another school, another group of kids." Nick moved to SC earlier this summer. His dad is in the Forces so he moves around a lot.

"Nick, you'll be fine. Don't worry. The school's great. Really." I said feeling sorry that he was so worried.

"Hey D?"

"Yeah?"

"Nothing."

"Umm... Okay?"

I wondered what he was going say, Nick was acting weird lately and I just thought it was his nerves.

"I've gotta go now and get ready for tomorrow. I'll meet you at the corner, alright?"

"Sure, see you there at 8:30!"

After I get off the phone with Nick I go and wash my face and brush my teeth, and through my hair into a top knot. I grab my dress and put it in my mom's bed so it will be ready for tomorrow. I crawl into my twin sized bed and pull the covers up to my chin. It takes my no time at all until I nod off into a deep dreamless sleep.
