For as long as I've bin a reaper you would think its strange that I have never touched a dead body with my hands.
I held Jennifer's light body. She was cold; her lips were turning pale. Never before had I held the dead, only ever the soul.
I wish I could say she didn't look different, that her skin didn't become cold because I held her for so long, that her lips were still pink, and her cheeks still rosy, I wish she looked like she was sleeping.
Often times people speak of the dead looking like they are asleep, but some how, anyone who sees a dead body will know they are dead. You get a strange feeling of dread that settles in your stomach, your brain wish it not to be true, but your heart will except it, and the sadness creeps out of into your vain's. It was strange, the feeling of grief hung around my still heart. Weaving around it until it formed a hard shell, I couldn't feel anything. My body and emotions where numb, only the grief around my heart could be felt.
Her lips became dry, and her cheeks paled. Her skin was cold and her limbs dangled, her hair remained shining and her eyelashes rested against her cheek bones softly. She was still beautiful, even in death.I sat for a couple of minutes; the bench was cold underneath me. I stood slowly, still holding a body of the wonderful woman. I herd my horse walk up to the gazebo, waiting patiently for me. I lifted Jen up, and held her as my horse walked to the near by cemetery.
She was just a girl! No, she was not, she was lively, she could enchant a man with one word and make a woman smile with a simple glance. She wasn't just a kind person, she was a angel. An Angel that didn't die in battle, or a cloud of flames, but an angle that kissed the world goodbye with a small whisper and a short lullaby.
I reached the cemetery and looked for a tombstone that would work. A large statue of a angle sat on top of a grave, it stated at the ground, as if wishing the person would come back. My heart began to ache even more.
I looked for a tomb, I found a family one, a small concrete building that I could walk into. I held Jennifer tightly as I walked through, nervous of how the spirits in the underworld would react to a human body.
Spirits turned and looked at her body, they quickly erupted into lost whispers and mumbled words. None of them reached for her, they simply gathered close and looked, there glowing eyes staring with curiosity.
I walked forward, my horse trailed behind me, and the spirits lined the path I walked; they were confused. I pushed the castle doors open and walked down the corridor, other Reapers would stop and stare at me. I moved at a slow pace, drawing out the walk as long as I could. Finally, after I reached deaths door, my emotions settled. I began to receive waves of excitement from death, but also, a hint of sadness lingered on it.
I knocked lightly before entering. I was nervous to see what death would say. As I entertain I was surprised to see that the room had a strange happy feeling in it. Death sat in his chair comfortably, looking relaxed and care free. Next to him sat a beautiful woman, I immediately realized she was life. Karma and fate sat on either sides of them, looking bored. I was to grief stricken to bow or show respect, I simply didn't care what happened to me. Death didn't say anything about my rude manner, if anything, he seemed to find it funny.
Life smiled slightly at me, but I didn't care to smile back. "Hello Constantine, I'm glad you finished your job." I nodded and looked down at Jennifer, my cold heart ached.
Life spoke up "Reaper, I know you are upset, but please look at someone when The are talking to you." I didn't look up, I had always thought life was a bitch. life's anger seemed to build, death laid a hand on her leg. He started to speak but I found my voice, using all the strength I had I croaked out "why would you do this to me?" My anger made it easier to break the law against reapers talking. "Why did you send me off to fall in love with a girl, only to make me kill her?"
I could feel deaths shock at my outburst but I continued to stare at the woman in my arms. Gently I laid her on the ground and stared up at death. "Why did you have to be such an ass? Why did you have to do that to me? Why?" By now I was chocking out the words, forcing myself not to cry.
"My dearest Reaper, do you have any idea how much it pains me to see you like this? I'm so incredibly sorry I did not tell you this earlier, but I am handing over the position as death to you. Jennifer is to be your wife." Deaths voice was full of emotion, making my already aching heart feel like it was splitting in two. Life looked down on me with sadness and pride as she whispered "She is going to do an amazing job."
I stood in shock, shaking in a mixture of sadness and anger. "Why didn't you tell me?" I asked. Death lifted his head and I could see his eyes glowing red. "I didn't want to ruin the mission, I was afraid that you would refuse if you knew you had to take over as death."
He stepped down from his thrown and walked towards me, he took the shimmering gold crown off of his head. He placed onto my head and I could feel the power flowing through me. He reached up and took off his hood, allowing me to see the face of death.
He looked like somethings strait out of a vampire novel. His eyes were dark red and seemed to glow against his pale smooth skin, he had long smooth black hair that fell to his shoulders. "Constantine, I Valentine Rosally hand my title as death to you, you will watch over the souls of the departed and lead the reapers, and in the end, it will be you that ends the world. Do you accept these conditions?" I took a deep breath and bowed my head. "I do."
When I looked back up Valentine was smiling, pride shown in his eyes. "Constantine, you will also need to watch over life. Protect her and cherish her, she will be the only one left in the end. If she were to be harmed it would affect the entire universe. Also be warned, the devil still lives, he will do everything in his power to control life, you are the only one who can protect her." I suddenly felt as thought a weight has bin placed on my chest, this might be to much responsibility.
Life stepped forward and held Jennifer's hand, she began to him a small song and I watched as Jennifer began to breath again, and in a few short seconds she opened her eyes. "Where-" life placed her four head on Jennifer's. I watched in amazement as Jennifer's eyes glazed over and I herd her mumble "I do."
Jennifer's body began to glow, her cloths changed into a long white dress, and her skin emitted a faint glow of white. Life placed her silver crown onto Jennifer, helping her stand.
I felt something shift and looked down to see I was wearing a black suit and tie with a red dress shirt underneath. Jennifer stood beside me and I felt the pains in my heart drift away. Valentine smiled and said "by the power invested in by God himself, I now pronounce you two life and death, and husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride!" Karma and fate bursts into cheers and valentines wife began to tear up as I leaned down slowly and placed a soft kiss on Jennifer's lips, I pulled back just enough to to whisper "I love you" before kissing her with every ounce of love I had.
