After what happened at the motel, I had a total breakdown. I remember vaguely being carried inside another building, but at this point it was the same old thing happening over and over again; New safe place, shit goes down, zombies everywhere and everyone dies and we barely get out alive. I just lost track of everything, sleeping, eating, even trying to survive. I just stayed in the truck. The only time I ate was when someone shoved a bit of food into my face, or snapped their fingers in front of me a few times, even if it was just for a moment of clarity.
When I finally came back to reality, with little to no memory of anything outside of the truck, I was surprised to find Warren in the back with me, in the same state. Everything still felt foggy, my head and my vision, but even trying to focus my eyes was a challenge. I felt Cassandra shift beside me as she put her seat belt on. The truck accelerated, insanely fast, and continued to stall; I looked around into the back of the truck, onto the tray. It was just us, Mack and Addy were on a scooter, further up ahead.
I went to move but found myself tightly buckled in, and I started to panic. Cassandra shifted in her seat, and put her hand on my knee, reassuringly. Murphy tried to crack a joke, but there wasn't conversation. I looked out the window, not surprised at the constant greenery, still there. Even though the world went to shit, the grass was still green. I kicked my foot underneath the seat, and felt my bag still in place, exactly where I'd left it. I looked out the window, staring into the distance. Still green."What happened to Garnett? I don't remember much, just that community and an outbreak. Please?" I pleaded with her.
"There was another community, it felt secure, it looked it too. But it wasn't, not in the end. We all stayed in the mess all, Garnett and Warren left to share a bed. There was this guy you see, he thought the apocalypse was the work of God, so he left and started a church. Three people came back with supposed good intentions but when it came down to it they were still kind of...brainwashed." Cass paused, and I could see her chewing the inside of her lip, by the dimple that formed under her lip.
"They cut their own throats and that's when the outbreak started. Everyone was safe, well, as safe as you could be, and then Garnett just went down. He went down fighting." Cass finished and I could see her lip quivering.
"Good morning people. Welcome to the third day of the six month of the year 03 A.Z.
If you're listening to this, it means you're still alive. So congratulations. Or condolences. You know, whatever. If you're noticing more despair in my voice than usual today, it's because we lost someone special. I know, we lose people all the time. Getting your face chewed off by a Z is more common than making it to your next birthday. But this guy...This one's worth mentioning. Charles Garnett, First Sergeant, Army National Guard Reservist, was an honest to God, real life, actual good guy. He fought for other people, not just for his own survival. And he did something that's pretty much impossible these days. He gave people hope. Remember hope? Remember thinking that we might actually come out the other side of this thing? Yeah. That. Sergeant Garnett died trying to give us a reason to hope. And for that...Sergeant Charles Garnett, on behalf of a grateful nation, or whatever the hell we are now, we salute you." A crackled voice came through the radio as we drove.Something banged suddenly underneath the truck, Doc and Murphy both let out a tut noise as the truck came to a slow stop, Mack and Add circled back.
"Radiator?" Mack questioned Doc as steam rose from the engine, in a big white cloud.
"Yup." Doc popped his tongue, and Murphy started to get shitty.
"Fixable?"
"Dunno." Doc muttered. I couldn't see them through the windshield, but I didn't have to see him to know that it was Murphy making the snarky comment about Warren.
