The only way to ever tell time and keep track of the passing months was the ever growing bump in my stomach. At this point, my shirt was barely even covering it. We'd lost Murphy, maybe for good this time. After all this time I never actually thought he'd abandon us. But he did. Doc got shot. We thought he wasn't gonna make it, I couldn't tell where the bullet had hit him.
After shit went down, I got separated from the group, at least what was left of it. Warren, a possibly dead Doc and 10k.The blast wave went on for miles and I hoped they survived, but it was a long shot. I ran as fast as I could, with one hand wrapped around the underside of my belly, the field near the shed was littered with household items: Fridges, a washing machine, and a few other unidentifiable things, ravaged by time. I thought back to class, learning about the wars and what to do in a nuclear attack.
"Now, during war times, common items were used for protection. With the threat of nuclear war just around the corner, people were afraid. In the event of a nuclear attack, if you were quick enough, you could hide inside a fridge, to survive. Any questions?"
I ran for the fridge.
My bag bobbed up and down on my back as I ran. I scrambled to get a grip on the fridge door, and managed to close it just as I was thrown. I don't know how long the blast went on for, or how far I was thrown, but it felt like hours.Silence.
I carefully opened the door, and peeked out. The wind howled around me as I stood, wreckage from god knows what was strewn all around. I ran. And ran until I couldn't breath. No longer having a functioning inhaler was now a problem. And an almost gigantic baby bump.
My bag was the last piece of me, the old Emma was gone. The Emma that lived in solitary confinement for 3 years, and the Emma that was barely surviving in a group. They were dead.
I walked until the light turned to dark, where I found a small tunnel.
A small tunnel that housed a black truck, surrounded by shattered glass and blood on the pavement. With night approaching quicker than I'd like, I walked up to the truck, upside down on its roof, and climbed in, cutting myself on broken glass. I managed to pull the folding seat downwards, so that I had something partially comfy to lie on. As the night grew darker, zombies came out of the woodwork. Ones that survived the blast. They were covered in ash.
Sleep was rough, half awake, half asleep and ready to get up and fight at any time; but the zombies weren't interested, they just kept walking, not distracted by anything.
The sun rose over a new world.
